Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

In this lesson, the learning experience can be supported for all students by using closed captions in the
BrainPop video. For ELL students, this will help them by allowing them to read the words in case they are
having trouble understanding. Learning can also be supported for visual learners as we demonstrate the push
and pull movements in the classroom stations. Having the in-class stations will help ADHD students to stay on
task due to the exciting and engaging nature of the project.

Lesson idea implementation:

To begin the lesson, the teacher will introduce pushing and pulling with the BrainPop video. After the class
watches the video, the teacher will create a list on the board with 2 columns: pushing and pulling. The
students will have the opportunity to raise their hands and the class will collectively come up with ideas about

different objects that you can either push or pull. The teacher can demonstrate pushing and pulling with
objects found in the classroom such as doors and drawers so the students can visualize the different of what
happens when you push an object, and when you pull an object. The teacher can demonstrate by standing in
front of the class and having a selected student come up and with both hands, push against her body as a
demonstration of force. This movement will ‘push’ her forward. For the next activity in the lesson, the
students will have a few different stations with push and pull activities. For push, the students will have a
station that requires them to stack blocks and use a wooden track to create a ramp in which they will push a
small toy car down and watch the movement. For pull, the students will have a station that will require them
students to pair up. In their pairs, they will each use a pencil (or other stick like object) and place a rubber
band around both. The students will gently pull their pencils apart and observe the stretching movement of
the rubber band as it is pulled apart. To complete the lesson and assess the knowledge of the students, they
will be given a multiple choice work sheet where they will have to match the words friction, force, motion,
push, and pull with their correct definition. They will have to give 2 examples of objects that can be pushed
and pulled.

Reflective Practice:
I feel that the activities chosen in this lesson can impact student learning because they are fun, engaging
activities that make understanding and visualizing the concepts of pushing and pulling easy. To further extend
this lesson, the teacher can assign a class project that will require the students to create a video at home that
shows them pushing and pulling different objects in different environments around them (home, grocery
store, sports, etc.) and turn it into the teacher. This project would also be a way to implement another
technology tool that would further enhance their learning experience!
