Introduction
Extortion is a criminal offense of obtaining money, property, or services from an individual or
institution, dishonestly, through putting any person in fear of any injury to that person, or to any
other person.

This project deals with the offence of Extortion as defined under Section 383 of the Indian Penal
Code, 1860. It also deals with the key ingredients of the offence of extortion and critically examines
different provision of the Indian Penal Code which deal with the offences related to extortion and it
also deals with the specific provisions which provide for the punishment of the offences relating to
extortion and its aggravated forms. This projects also focuses on some other offences which are
similar to that of extortion and have become a major issue in the recent past.

Objective of the Study


1. To understand the basic concepts of section 383 of Indian Penal Code, 1860.
2. To understand the different offences which are related to extortion.
3. To understand and examine the different offences which do not come under the ambit of
Section 383 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860.

Hypothesis

The researcher presumes that the offence of extortion unlike theft is applicable on both movable and
immovable property and the injury under extortion includes harm to any person, in body, mind,
reputation or property.

Research Methodology
The researcher has adopted doctrinal method of research. The researcher has made extensive use of the
library at the Chanakya National Law University and also the internet sources.
