Thank you for contacting me about H.R. 2083, the Registered Nurse Safe Staffing Act. It is an honor to represent the
people of Virginia's Seventh Congressional District, and I appreciate the opportunity to learn your thoughts on this issue.

H.R. 2083 was introduced by Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA) on April 29, 2015. It would require hospitals that participate in
Medicare to implement a staffing plan for nursing services throughout the hospital. This plan would require an
appropriate number of nurses provide direct care in order to ensure quality of care for the patients.

This legislation has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Ways and Means
Committee. I do not currently serve on either. I will keep your comments and concerns in mind if the bill comes before
me on the House floor.

I understand your concerns with understaffed hospitals. Inadequate nurse staffing may put patients at risk for longer
hospital stays, increased infections, medical errors, injuries, and even death. I support efforts to reduce the costs of care,
improve patient outcomes, and keep nurses at the bedside.
