Lesson Introduction
Today we are going to start a new book called The King’s Equal. Our learning goal for
this cycle is problem and solution.

Teacher Instruction

Sarah got new canvas shoes and she wore them to school. While at school it started
raining. Sarah knew that that the rain would ruin her new shoes. She ran down to the gym and
found the coach who said she could borrow a pair of tennis shoes to wear home that day.

In this story what was the problem (Sarah did not want to ruin her new shoes)

What was the solution (The coach let her borrow shoes so hers did not get ruined)

Very good! Let’s see if we can find a problem and possible solution in the story during our
reading today.

Read pages 1-3 of The King’s Equal aloud to the class.

Check for Understanding

Students have questions to answer on the iPads. Read questions with students before they
read together.

Guided/Independent Practice

Students partner read pages 4-7 and silent read pages 8-10. Then as a small group (3-4
already grouped) they discuss the questions and we go over them as a whole group when
everyone is finished.

Closure

Today we talked about problem and solution. What do you think is the problem in the
story? (The prince wants to be king but his dad said he has to find a wife who is equal to him in
every way first.) And what is the prince’s solution? (He sends his counsel out to find him a wife.)

Wonderful! You are doing great spotting those problems and solutions!

Now we let’s do our vocabulary and word power for this cycle on your own.

Evaluation

Did the students answer the questions with at least 80% accuracy?
Did the students determine the problem and solution in the given stories with at elast 80%
