Political

The Philippine Clean Water Act (2004) requires Department of Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR), in coordination with the National Water Resources Board (NWRB), to designate certain areas as
water quality management areas, and to implement a wastewater charge system in those areas. The Act
requires owners or operators of facilities that discharge effluents to secure a wastewater discharge permit.
The permit should specify, among others, the quantity and quality of effluent that said facilities are
allowed to discharge into a particular water body.
The Marine Pollution Decree (1976) aims to prevent and control the pollution of marine waters through
the dumping of wastes and other matters that create hazards to human health and harm living resources
and marine life
Waste water due to uneaten feeds carries ammonia and nitrite toxic that can pollute the environment,
affect other marine life, and hazardous to human health. Uneaten feeds becomes toxic because of
excessive feeding, thus, resulting in massive disease that can cause slower growth and poorer survival of
shrimps.

Economic
In Shrimp farming, feed cost accounts more than half of total expenses and without efficient management
practices it is not fully consumed by the shrimp, moreover it results in deteriorating water and soil quality.
Despite the grave social and environmental problems resulting from shrimp farming, the Philippines and
other Asian countries have received a high level of financial support from international financial
institutions like the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the IBRD.

Social
The Filipino Government, in response to the evident problems caused by intensive shrimp culture, is
now trying to promote semi-intensive culture of shrimp using environment-friendly technology. Pellet
feeds are feeds that are manufactured and provide the balanced nutrition needed by the
shrimps. Having understood the feeding habits of shrimp and the role of feed in the
growth of shrimp and economics of culture, nutritionally balanced feed in the form of
pellets is used in semi-intensive and farming systems.
Technology
As fish production facilities grow, and cost of labor also increases, the task of monitoring of this kind of
marine product for performance characteristics such as growth and health becomes more difficult. At the
same time, manual feeding needs more man power.
E-SHRIMF is an automatic feeder and monitoring device, the amount feeds is measured to the amount of
feeds needed to a pond, as a result, the uneaten feeds will be lessen. The growth of the shrimp in pond
will be equal and the disease problem will diminished.
