2 Overview
ZTE GSM BSS supports the star, tree and chain networking modes at the Abis interface
between BTSs and the BSC. The following figure shows the star, tree and chain
networking modes. The star networking mode is the most commonly used mode and
always recommended in general applications. The star network has a simple topology
and the highest transmission reliability. The tree and chain networking modes support
more effective transmission multiplexing and saves transmission resources. However,
the tree and chain networking modes with complex topologies are less reliable than the
star networking mode. Therefore, these two networking modes are generally used in
transmission constrained scenarios.

3 Technical Description
If two BTSs are cascaded through E1, the FPGA has 1Kbyte of RAM space to cache one
frame E1/CPU TDM data. The BTS sends and receives data over any two E1 links after
the FPGA timeslot crosstab is set to 8-bit exchange module. One E1 is selected for
connection with the BSC and another E1 is selected for connection with a lower-level
SDR. The TSI timeslot cross connection is configured in the network management
system to cross-connect the timeslots of these two E1 links for transparent connection
between the lower-level SDR to the BSC. The entire E1 or partial timeslots of the E1 can
be cross-connected according to the bandwidth requirement, finally providing a fractional
E1 link.
If two BTSs are cascaded through FE, the upper-level BTS receives IP packets from the
BSC. If the IP address in a packet belongs to the home BTS, the packet is processed by
the home BTS. If the IP address belongs to another BTS, the packet is forwarded
through the Abis interface. In addition to PPP, the Abis interface is configured for the
upper-level, including the global port and/or the IP address. In this case, the Abis
interface is only used for cascading but not service bearing. Therefore, the Abis interface
must be set to 0. An FE connection is configured for the lower-level BTS. The IP address
of the Abis interface of the upper-level BTS must be the gateway address.

6 Engineering Guide
The star networking mode is the most commonly used and recommended mode in
general applications. It features simple network topology and the highest transmission
reliability.
The tree and chain networking modes support more effective transmission multiplexing
and saves transmission resources. However, the tree and chain networking modes with
complex topologies are less reliable than the star networking mode. Therefore, these two
networking modes are generally used in transmission constrained scenarios.
The star networking mode is a traditional networking mode. For the commissioning of a
star network, refer to the ZGO-05-04-001 Abis over IP Feature Guide.
A star network can be deployed by timeslot cross-connection and the BTS cluster local
switch. For details of timeslot cross-connection, refer to the ZGO-05-02-013 BBU Chain
Networking. For details of the BTS cluster local switch, refer to the ZGO-05-05-002 BTS
Cluster Local Switch.
For details of BBU chain networking during BTS commissioning, refer to the
ZGO-05-02-013 BBU Chain Networking.
The tree networking mode can only be implemented by the BTS cluster load switch. For
the commissioning of a tree network, refer to the ZGO-05-05-002 BTS Cluster Local
Switch.
The star networking mode supports a simple network topology and the highest
transmission reliability.
The tree and chain networking modes support more effective transmission multiplexing
and saves transmission resources. However, these two networking modes have
complex topologies and are less reliable than the star networking mode. The tree and
chain networking modes are generally used in transmission constrained scenarios.
