Part II – Reading Comprehension

Test 9th Form Teacher Cristina Rocha

TEEN SCENE: Three bad eating habits to stay away from

Being a teenager can be very busy. Teens usually find themselves with a schedule full
of responsibilities including schoolwork, extracurricular activities and various social
events. Such a full schedule can often cause teens to overlook* the importance of eating
balanced, nutritional meals. The benefits of eating healthy include weight regulation,
5 more energy, combat of various diseases and disorders*, and better sleep. Obviously,
eating healthy is important but it is especially important not to fall into the common eating habits that most
teens are exposed to.
One of the biggest mistakes teens make in their dieting habits is to skip meals. Skipping meals is an easy
habit for teens to fall into* simply because many teens feel they don’t have the time to sit down and eat when
10 they have a busy schedule. Often, teens skip breakfast, which is the most important meal of the day. Eating
breakfast on a regular basis improves metabolism, energy, concentration, weight control, school performance,
and mood.
Another bad dieting habit common to teens is eating fast food. This is a bad habit to fall into as fast food
choices are often unhealthy. The most common reason for teens falling into this habit is the convenience of the
15 fast food option. Fast food allows you to eat on the go so you don’t have to prepare and take time to eat a well-
balanced nutritional meal. It is very difficult to cut out eating fast food completely, so it is important to take into
consideration the nutritional value of the choices you make when eating on the go. Most fast foods have more
nutritional options to choose from. Also remember that occasional fast food is not going to be infinitely harmful
to your health; just make sure it does not become the norm of your lifestyle.
20 Finally, teens often have the habit of heavily snacking. Snacking does not have to be a bad habit. Usually
teens snack heavily to compensate for skipping meals. Often it is easier to just snack on something that is
available instead of trying to evaluate the best nutritional choice. So while snacking is not necessarily a bad
habit to fall into, try to balance out the snacks you eat and make sure you are eating the foods your body needs.
Enjoy life and the foods you eat but work to maintain healthy eating habits that will follow you into
25 adulthood.
