Today’s children are what we call “digital Natives’ as they have been born in to a digital world

(Howell, 2013). “In the 21st century, digital information is rapidly overtaking print as the
principal means of communication. Digital fluency is a key focus for Ministry centrally-funded
professional learning support (PLD Changes will lift student achievement, 23 Sept. 2015 ).”
(Elearning.tki.org.nz, 2018).

Digital fluency is about learning and teaching technology in today’s world “Broadly speaking,
digital fluency is a combination of digital, or technical, proficiency: able to understand, select
and use the technologies and technological systems; digital literacy: cognitive or intellectual
competencies, which include being able to read, create, evaluate and make judgements and
apply technical skills while doing so; and social competence, or dispositional knowledge: the
ability to relate to others and communicate with them effectively”(Spencer, 2018).
Teachers are expected to be teaching their students manly through technology as once they
leave school the world expects everyone to be able to use technology on a daily basis and in
different ways. “In the years ahead, digital fluency will become a prerequisite for obtaining
jobs, participating meaningfully in society, and learning throughout a lifetime. (Resnick,
2002, p. 33) [via White, 2013]” (Spencer, 2018).

A teacher needs to be learning and staying on top of technology due to this social
expectation. “It is essential that digital fluency is fostered within the school curriculum and in
the pedagogical practices of schools and teachers so students can thrive in the digital age.”
(Elearning.tki.org.nz, 2018) Teachers are expected to have their children at a digital fluency
goal by certain years. Teaching digital fluency in the classroom is to be using purposeful
activities in the classroom (Howell, 2013). The goals for a child in year 8 are different to a
child in higher grades as teachers wouldn’t expect children to have a proper understanding
of all digital technology at this age.
