GUIDELINES
SEMESTER I 2016/2017
ASSESSMENT (REPORT WRITING & ORAL PRESENTATION)
PART 1 (Week 8 - 9)
1. You are a part of the students’ representative council investigating an
issue that is currently being covered by the media. You will work in
groups of five (5).
2. Each group need to carry out the following in order to complete your
investigation:
A. Identifying a topic
- Topic chosen should highlight current issues (local or
international) that are discussed in the media (printed
or online).
- Topics of sensitive nature (politics, religion, sexuality)
should be avoided.
- Ensure contribution from each member of the group.
- Consult with your lecturer before finally deciding on a
topic.
B. Finding appropriate sources
- Sources of information to complete this task can be
retrieved through library research (books, magazines,
journal articles, newspaper articles etc.) as well as
online search.
C. Searching for academic information on the internet
- Sources of information to complete this task can be
retrieved through online searches.
- These searches include online journal articles, online
news articles, websites etc.
D. Finding quality sources on the internet
- Sources of information gathered online must be of
reliable sources and of academic nature.
E. Evaluating your sources
- Consult with your lecturer should there be any issues in
ensuring reliability or quality of your sources.
F. Managing your sources
- It is recommended that all sources of information about
your chosen topic (printed or online) should be
collected in one single place. This can be done via
online (Dropbox or Google Drive) and should be
accessible to all group members.
Reminder:
● All group members should be able to contribute in completing the tasks
above.
● Group leaders are responsible to ensure group participation as well as
keeping track of progress of tasks.
PART 2 – ACADEMIC GROUP DISCUSSION (Week 10-11)
1. Now that you have collected your sources of information in relation to
your chosen topic, the next step will be to discuss what you have found.
2. A group discussion is necessary in order for all members to look at what
have been collected thus far.
3. It is also a good opportunity to look at what information is missing and if
there are any similarities in any of the information collected. Refining your
sources should be done at this stage.
4. Group leaders are responsible to manage this discussion. Ensure
participation from all members.
5. Any conflicts that take place in the discussion must be solved as a group.
6. By the end of the discussion, your group should have most of the sources
needed to write a report.
PART 3 – ORAL PRESENTATION & REPORT WRITING (Week 10-14)
1. After the decisions that were made during your group discussion, your
next group task will be to transfer the appropriate information regarding your
chosen topic into report form.
2. Your group will produce a written report highlighting your chosen topic.
This report MUST include the following:
a. Introduction
b. Findings
c. Conclusion
d. Reference
e. Appendices
3. Report requirement:
➢ 5-10 pages (excluding appendices)
➢ Font : Times New Roman or Arial
➢ Font Size : 12
➢ 1.5 spacing
➢ Cover Page
4. Other than the written report, you are required to give a presentation
based on your topic. Prepare visual aids (PowerPoint or Prezi) that highlight
your topic’s findings. All members will be involved in the presentation.
5. The oral presentation MUST include the following:
a. Introduction
b. Findings
c. Conclusion
d. Group Reflection
