ONLY A GAME
Sport is about teamwork and fair play. At least, this is the message that most parents would like
to convey to their children, especially when their children are competing on the sports field. In
fact, most parents are convinced that their presence among the spectators encourages
successful co-operation and good sportsmanship. Yet, they can also become very stressed
5 when watching their children compete, especially when their young ones do not perform
according to their expectations.
Sometimes, parental anxiety and ambition get out of hand. In fact, a friendly game can turn quite
ugly when parents are not pleased with their children’s sporting results. In Indiana, for example,
an angry man attacked the coach of his child’s baseball team, and in Wisconsin a mother went
1 to court after her daughter’s team lost an important soccer match. Furthermore, there have been
0 even worse scenarios. At a hockey game in Massachusetts, for example, the young players
actually witnessed one father beating another dad to death.
These, of course, are extreme examples; yet, the number of parents who take their children’s
athletic performance too personally is increasing. The reasons are varied. While some parents
would like to relive imaginary past glories through the successes of their children, others want
their children to compete on an international level and become highly paid professionals.
1 However, the most likely reason is that modern society is very competitive and this is sharply
5 reflected in parents’ attitudes to sport.
Parental obsession with winning leaves young athletes feeling frustrated and confused. Many
children think that their parents are sending them mixed messages. On the one hand, they are
taught the Olympic principle that participating is more important than winning, but on the other,
they are being pressured to excel at any cost. As one child said, “My father always tells me that
it’s only a game. So why does he get so angry when we lose?”

SMOKING ON-SCREEN
We have all heard of Hollywood, but have you ever heard of “Bollywood”? If you look for
it on the map, you won’t find it. It is the name of the Hindi-language film industry, which
is based in Bombay, India. While Bollywood might be less well known than Hollywood, it
is certainly more productive, putting out some 800 films annually. It has also got a much
larger audience. In the year 2002, Bollywood sold one million tickets more than
Hollywood did, and it is estimated that 15 million people watch Bollywood films each
day.
Yet, despite this huge success, it now appears that Bollywood films may be dangerous
to your health. Recently they have been criticised by the World Health Organisation
(WHO), which suspected that India’s film industry was heavily promoting smoking on-
screen. The WHO studied many of the films that Bollywood has produced over the last
decade and found that three out of every four films showed scenes in which the stars
were smoking.
The WHO’s study also made a point of highlighting the glamour which the film industry
attaches to smoking. In the past it was generally the villains who smoked; however,
recently there has been a tendency to portray heroes and other positive characters as
smokers. The same study concluded that teenagers who see their favourite actor or
actress smoking are 16 times more likely to regard smoking as a positive activity, and
they are three times more likely to take up the habit.
It is estimated that about three million people die annually as a result of smoking. One
third of these people come from India alone. The WHO obviously hopes that by
reducing film viewers’ exposure to smoking, the number of smoking-related deaths will
fall. However, it is unlikely that the Bollywood film industry will change its policy even
with these alarming statistics. In fact, Mahesh Bhatt, a leading Indian film-maker, was
rather surprised that the WHO had decided to direct its efforts against the film industry.
Instead, he suggested attacking the immediate source of the problem – the tobacco
industry itself.
