Here, he focue on one element of the artwork, ut the technique were ued
throughout.

TP 1
Firt off, gra the grecale droid (TUTDROID.AI) I’ve created from the project file,
and open it up in Illutrator. You’re more than welcome to create our own oject and
ue thi tutorial a a guide to colouring and lighting. The eaut of thi technique i that
it’ applicale to almot an hape.
TP 2
We’re going to ue a et of gradient watche to colour the hape. For thi tutorial, I’ve
alread created a et of rich lue watche, which ou will find on the ‘Palette’ laer of
TUT-DROID.AI.
If lue in’t our thing – or ou’re uing our own image for thi tutorial – create dark,
mid and light verion of our choen hue.

TP 3
What I’ve found crucial in helping define how to colour a hape i the creation of a
light ource. etting thi up i a imple a drawing a circle on the canva to ditinguih
where the light i coming from.
A guide like thi come in hand when our illutration ecome more complex and
confuing a ou loe count of the hape and gradient ued.
Create thi oject on a eparate laer and lock it.

Let’ go ack to the hape. Uing the light ource a a reference, egin colouring the
droid. tart with the ae a thi help define how the other are coloured.
Uing the Gradient tool (G) with the hape option elected, click and drag on the
hape to define the gradation of the gradient. I’ve ued the lightet gradient for the ae
and et it to ‘Radial’ in the Gradient palette (Window > Gradient).

ource. In thi cae, the lighter colour in the gradient egin at the top a the light
ource i aove the droid.

The econd tep to adding depth to the hape i giving the ae of the droid an inner
glow. An inner glow i ueful a, regardle of the angle of the gradient, it create a
hadow that follow the edge of the hape, giving it a evelled appearance.
With the ae hape of the droid elected, choe ffect > tlize > Inner Glow.
elect the ‘dge’ option, a hadow colour and a lur amount. If ou’re uing m droid
and colour cheme, elect #123860 a the colour with a lur of 8mm.
Chooe Multipl for the lending mode. et the opacit to 70% for a rich, dark
hadow. A hape var, o doe the level of lur applied; the maller the hape, the
le the amount of lur.

TP 6
Appling an outer glow i achieved uing a imilar proce to the previou tage,
except it ovioul occur outide of the hape, uing Outer Glow.
Peronall, I like to ue thi tool paringl a it allow ou to accentuate certain feature
of an oject, without looking like everthing’ glowing. For example, here I want to give
the impreion that the pink element in the droid are glowing.
To do thi, elect the hape, then chooe ffect > tlize > Outer Glow. A with the
Inner Glow option, adjut the lending mode, lur and opacit. Leave the lending
mode a creen, a thi i ideal for oject on darker ackground, with 100% opacit
for maximum glow and a 2mm lur. I ued a light pink for the glow colour (#FF92C).
TP 7
The next few tep are pivotal in creating the final effect. We’re going to create a
cutom ruh that taper, widen and then taper again. Thi ruh i going to e ued
for highlight and hadow.
Create a new laer. elect the Arc tool, which i on the Toolar under the Line egment
tool. When elected, hold hift while ou drag the tool acro to create an equall
proportional arc.

elect our newl created arc and rotate it 45° clockwie (Oject > Tranform >
Rotate -45°), until it’ horizontal with the end facing down. You hould now e
eeing half of our tapered ruh troke.
We need to mirror thi line, in order to make a hape out of it. To do thi, firt right-click
and elect Tranform > Reet ounding ox.

TP 9
elect the line and hold Alt, whilt dragging it to create a duplicate. With the duplicate
elected, chooe Oject > Tranform > Rotate and et the value to 180°. Click OK,
and our reult hould e a mirrored verion of the arc.
TP 10
For the next tep, witch on mart Guide (Cmd/Ctrl + U), and move the duplicated
arc to match up with the end of the original arc. The et wa to do thi in election
tool mode (V) i dragging the arc either of it end anchor point, and lining it up
to the correponding end of the other arc.
After lining up the anchor point correctl, our curor will change from lack to white.
elect oth the arc, right-click and chooe Join. Thi join the anchor point. The two
arc are now a hape.
TP 11
elect our new hape and fill it with lack. Open the ruh palette, if necear
(Window > ruhe or F5), and elect New ruh (the utton to the left of the
trahcan). From the tpe that follow, chooe Art ruh.
In the Art ruh Option dialog that open, et the ruh width to 25% and the
Colouriation value to Tint. Hit OK.
We’ve finihed making our highlight and hadow ruh, o ou can delete the
merged arc hape from the canva.

TP 12
Create a new laer aove the droid and call it ‘ffect’. Ue our newl created ruh
to create a 3-pixel highlight troke in white (#FFFFFF) in the top left edge of the hape,
then a 3-pixel hadow troke in dark lue (#02244) in the ottom-right edge of the
hape.
The location of the highlight and hadow are defined the direction of our light
ource.
TP 13
lur the highlight and hadow troke electing one troke. From the top menu,
chooe ffect > lur > Gauian lur.
A with the inner and outer glow, the lur radiu i uuall relative to the ite of the
oject. In thi cae, I choe a 20-pixel radiu. The larger the radiu, the ofter the
colour. Repeat the ame proce for the hadow troke.

You’ll notice that the lur i leeding pat the urface area of the droid. Our next tep i
to create a clipping mak to rectif thi. Group the highlight and hadow troke
electing oth of them, and then Cmd/Ctrl + G.
From the droid laer, elect the ae of the hape, cop it (Cmd/Ctrl +C) and pate it
in place (Cmd/Ctrl + F) in the ‘ffect’ laer.

TP 15
Now the droid’ ae hould e on top of the lurred troke. elect oth the ae of
the droid ou’ve jut pated and the grouped troke, then Oject > Clipping Mak >
Make (or Cmd/Ctrl + 7). troke leeding outide of the hape are now contained
within the droid’ outline.

Out of peronal preference, I added ome additional lurred hape to the droid’ pink
ee. Thee were created in the ame wa a the troke, ut with filled-in hape.
