Bellringer: Research how Christianity became legal, and whether or not it changed the
Roman Empire? If so, what impact did it have?

Objective: Students will gain a deeper understanding of how Christianity spread and its
impact on the Roman Empire

Procedure:
 Bellringer
 Guided Notes on the Formation of the Church
 Break up Guided Notes with a reenactment of the battle of the Milvian Bridge
 Finish up Guided Notes on the Formation of the Church

o What are four reasons that Christians were persecuted in the Roman
Empire
o What are some reasons that Christianity might have appealed to the
Romans
o What is martyrdom? How did it affect the view on Christianity?

 Handout Power to the Students Activity where students must do Option A, can
choose between Options B and C, and Option D is completely optional
o Option A- Writing assignment of two paragraphs on the most important
issues that lead to the fall of the Western Roman Empire
o Option B- Write a poem or song about the influence and spread of
Christianity during the Roman Empire
o Option C- Draw a picture of a Roman contribution
o Option D- Come up with a skit about anything that was a major part of
Ancient Rome from the Republic to the Empire

Objective: Students will gain a mastery of details and key information on the Ancient
Roman Empire

Procedure:
 Bellringer
 Test
 Draw a map of the Byzantine Empire and label:
o Continents that are Relevant
o Major Bodies of Water
o Constantinople
 Character Journal (If time allows, minimum of 2)
o Point of view from a soldier, or veteran in Rome’s army after they started
hiring mercenaries
o Point of View of a Roman citizen after the kingdom was split into two.
What do you think of this? How has it affected religion?
o A Roman citizen after Christianity has been legalized. What do you think
of the new, legal faith? Does it affect how you go about your day to day
life?
