RATIONALE

Located at the Alumni Hall of Gallanosa National High School, the teen center was aimed
to create an open ears, mind, and door mentality to the youth of Gallanosa National High School
and surrounding areas.
This project was conceptualized through the conducted case studies of the Philosophy
students of Mrs. Maria Elinor E. Ignacio. Based on the studies, 17% of high school students, 13-
15 years old said they are suffering from mental health disorders and attempted suicide at least
once. Out of this 17%, eighty-five percent said that they are not stable enough to make choices and
decisions. The case studies also showed some causes of the depression and sadness of some
students. The most prominent source is work-related stress or generally stress from work
concerning school. Personal relationships were also considered as one of the sources.
Because of these data, the need to come up with a solution tested some students and
teachers of Gallanosa National High School. Fortunately, the Federation of Associations for
Communities and Children’s Empowerment (FACE), Inc. in partnership with ChildFund
Philippines invited Gallanosa National High School to participate in the Training Workshop on
Peer Counseling last October 20, 2017 held at Una Pizzeria, Sorsogon City. This training became
a venue to fully conceptualize and make the desired solution to help the youth of Gallanosa
National High School happen.
Designed by teens, for the teens, the Teen Center and Memorandum of Understanding was
formally launched and signed last November 28, 2017 at Gallanosa National High School. The
launching was attended by some Local Government Unit Officials, FACE Inc. stakeholders and
members, and officers of the Commission on Population (POPCOM) of Region V.
The Teen Center was designed to be a venue for helping students whenever they are dealing
with problems and concerns. It is also intended to develop positive social skills, foster moral
development, and enhance self-esteem of the students, and to provide appropriate information and
services on sexuality and reproductive health for young people through workshops, counseling,
training and among others.
Today, the Teen Center is operated by 18 trained peer counselors from Grades 10-12 of
Gallanosa National High School. The Teen Center was functional during the Foundation Days of
Gallanosa Naitonal High School last March 21, 2018 and the trained peer counselors was all
introduced during the said event. This incoming school year 2018-2019, the Teen Center, along
with the peer counselors of Gallanosa National High School, will be fully operational.
