Management Team & Governance

The management team is the group of individuals that operate at the higher levels of an
organization and have day-to-day responsibility for managing other individuals and maintaining
responsibility for key business function. The management team is also generally responsible for
putting together the business strategy and ensuring the business objectives are met. The
management team are held accountable by the company’s board of the directors. Some
organization may operate a fairly flat team hierarchy with one or just a few layers of management
while other companies may operate with several layers of the management team.

While governance is establishment of policies, and continuous monitoring of their proper

implementation of the governing body of an organization. It includes the mechanisms required to
balance the powers of the members (with the associated accountability), and their primary duty of
enhancing the prosperity and viability of the organization.

But, in Stigma Motion, Ron Burton did not care too much about the formal organizational
structure or exact job descriptions because he more towards on getting result of his company.

The Sigma Motion was involved by Ron, Bob and Michael from the Burton family. Ron
Borton, the father was the CEO and chairman, Bob Borton was the vice president of operations,
and Michael was the vice president of sales. Bob and Michael was places in separate function areas
by their father to best utilize their unique skills in ways that added value to the compay. Even
though Bob and Michael generally worked well together, but each frustrated the other at times. To
mediate the differences between the two siblings, Mary, their mother was often called on to
facilitate.

Besides the family members in management, there were a number of key nonfamily
managers. Chuck Briscoe was the president, June Goldberg was the chief financial officer, Jim
Collins was the marketing manager and Ron Bates was the chief engineer. The nonfamily
managers’ perspective was that Sigma Motion is a small that was all business systems. Business
systems describe the organization’s mission and strategy. This includes various forms of elements
that support business strategies such as organizational structures, systems, technologies and
specific processes that will assist the organization in achieving the goals outlined.
The business systems was based on task. It is based on accomplished of tasks. There was
also conscious behavior in the business systems. It is built around contractual relationships in
which people do agree jobs in return for agreed remuneration, behavior is consciously determined.
This shows that everyone in the organization know their job tasks. The organizations which
involved in business systems also showed the outward looking. The organization oriented
outwards towards producing goods or services for the market place. Lastly was exploiting change.
To ensure survival, the business system operates to make most of change, not to minimize it.

So, due to the limitations and ineffectiveness of “Command and Control”, managers
developed an alternative management strategy known as “Engage and Create”. In this method team
members are encouraged to participate in discussions and contribute. Furthermore, they are
advised to engage with other team members to build a stronger sense of teamwork and unity. This
will lead to increased productivity and accountability of each team member, driving the team
towards success.

The goals of the business systems are profits, earnings, efficiency and growth. The
relationships in the business systems are semi-personal or non-personal relationships-secondary
interests. So, the rules in the business systems includes the formal and written regulations which
usually accompanied by rewards and penalties. For evaluations, the support is limited to
performance and results where employees can be stopped and promoted. Besides that, the
replacement in the business system is due to retirement, promotion or when an employee leaves
the organization. The authority is based on the formal position in organization hierarchy or based
on the organization chart. As for the commitment, it is short term and based on rewards while
working.

In conclusion, team management is the ability of an individual or an organization to

administer and coordinate a group of individuals to perform a task. While governance is the way
the rules, norms and actions are structured, sustained, regulated and held accountable. The degree
of formality depends on the internal rules of a given organization and, externally, with its business
partners. As such, governance may take many forms, driven by many different motivations and
with many different results.
