17 The equation shows the reaction for the formation of sulphur trioxide.

2SO2(g) + O2(g) 2SO3(g) ∆H = –197kJ

Which change in reaction conditions would produce more sulphur trioxide?

A adding more catalyst
B decreasing the pressure
C increasing the temperature
D removing some sulphur trioxide(in terms of conc)

29A coil of clean copper wire is suspended in aqueous silver nitrate. Crystals of silver are deposited on
the copper wire.
Which statement is not correct?
A The copper is oxidised.
B The total mass of the crystals of silver increases gradually.
C The total number of positive ions in the solution is unchanged.
(AgNO3+Cu=Cu(NO3)2+Ag)1:2+ions
D The solution turns blue.
This question proved to be difficult and relied upon two pieces of chemical knowledge being known and
understood. First that copper(II) ions and silver ions have a different charge and secondly that the overall
positive charge due to metallic ions in the solution would be unchanged.

10 Which equation describes the most suitable reaction for making lead sulphate?

A Pb + H2SO4 →PbSO4 + H2

B PbCO3 + H2SO4 →PbSO4 + CO2 + H2O

C Pb(NO3)2 + H2SO4 →PbSO4 + 2HNO3

Guessing was widespread in this question. Lead sulphate is insoluble and should therefore be prepared
by mixing two compounds in solution. Thus alternative C was correct because these two reagents were
the only soluble pair of compounds.er

D Pb(OH)2 + H2SO4 →PbSO4 + 2H2O

19 Sulphur dioxide reacts with aqueous bromine according to the following equation.

SO2(g) + Br2(aq) + 2H2O(l) →H2SO4(aq) + 2HBr(aq)

Which element has been oxidised?

A bromine
B hydrogen
C oxygen
D sulphur

34 A solid substance Z burns in air to form a product that is gaseous at 20°C. What is Z?

A hydrogen
B carbon monoxide
C carbon
D magnesium
38 The diagram shows the structure of the compound 1,3-butadiene.

How many molecules of hydrogen are needed to saturate one molecule of 1,3-butadiene?
A1
B2
C3
D4
Options B and D were almost equally popular because four hydrogen atoms were needed to saturate the
compound. The split in the answers was probably due to many candidates missing the significance of the
word molecule in the stem of the question.er saturate(single carbon bond) molecule(1molecule 2 atom so
4 atom 1 molecule)

8 Which compound has both ionic and covalent bonds?
A ammonium chloride (NH4 HAVE +VE CHARGE AND CL-VE CHARGE)
B carbon dioxide
C ethyl ethanoate
D sodium chloride
As D in question seven, careful reading of the
question was imperative in order to arrive at the
correct answer. During the titration described in the
question, the pH of the solution would increase to 7
as indicated in alternative C, and mistakenly shown as
the answer by almost fifty percent of candidates. How
ever, the last eight words of the second sentence in
the stem meant that the pH would eventually reach a
value of 12.

Ans A

This question relied on

candidates appreciating the
need to convert between
grams and moles to work out
the correct answer.

Curve 2 showed that in the second

experiment more oxygen was
produced. The only method of
obtaining more product from a
reaction which is not reversible is
to use more of the starting
reagents.
Ans A
In the blast furnace,
iron(III) oxide is
reduced by either
carbon or carbon
monoxide neither
of which is a metal,
thus statement 3 is
not correct.

Question 2 In a titration it is essential to

have a flask in which the solutions
involved can react together. The only
alternative in the question which had a
flask as one of the essential pieces of
apparatus was C
