TEXT: Wolfson, Essential University Physics, 3rd Edition

MASTERING PHYSICS The problem sets and pre-class quizzes described

below are available on mastering physics (MP) in
Portal. Follow the instruction posed in Portal for
instructions on how to register and access contents
on MP. If you have not used MP before, you will
need an MP access code which is included when
you purchase the text at the U of T bookstore. A
stand alone MP account may be purchased at the
bookstore.

PROBLEM SETS You will have weekly homework assignments to be

completed through the web-based tutorial called
MasteringPhysics (MP). This is your chance to
practice with physics exercises and problems.
Students are encouraged to work with others,
however your work must be your own. Problem sets
are marked on accuracy. The late penalty for
problem sets is 10% per day.

PRE-CLASS QUIZ (PCQ): Pre-class quizzes (PCQs) will be due at 8 a.m. the
morning of each lecture. These assignments will
include a reading assignment and will involve new
material. You are encouraged to work with others,
however your work must be your own. PCQs are
marked on effort not accuracy. There will 21 pre-
class quizzes and your grade will be based on 19,
giving you two free PCQs.

IN-CLASS QUESTIONS: During lectures, several in-class questions will be

posed to the class. You are encouraged to work
with your neighbors to solve these and transmit
your answers. You will receive the full mark each
day for answering at least 85% of the questions.
There will 23 lecture days during the semester and
your grade will be based on 20, giving you three
free days.

PRE/POST-COURSE
DIAGNOSTIC QUIZZES: A diagnostic quiz will be given at the beginning and
the end of the course during practical. These
quizzes are one measure of student learning and the
results are used to improve the course. You will be
given points for participating in these quizzes.

PRACTICALS: The practicals are where you get to “do” physics

with a group of your peers. You do not need any
special equipment for practicals, just a calculator
and something to write with. Each week you and
your Team of 2 to 4 students will complete physics
activities and keep a single lab notebook (provided
by us). Each week this notebook will be collected
and marked. If you find you cannot attend your
weekly practical time please contact Ms. April
Seeley in room MP 129 or
phy132@physics.utoronto.ca.
TESTS: There will be 2 tests during the course of the
semester. The first is on February 6th from 6-
7:30pm and the second is on March 13th from 6-
7:30pm. Room assignments will be posted at a later
date. If you have a course-conflict you will be
permitted to register to write the alternate sitting,
which is the same day from 4:40-6:00pm.

FINAL EXAM: There will be a final exam. The exam date and room
assignments will be posted at a later date.

GRADING POLICY: Your grade will be calculated using both schemes

below and you will receive the higher of the two.
