Tutorial Sheet No. 2

BE CE (Batch 2013) Semester 1 (Sections 9 & 10)

Course Coordinator name: Akhil Shetty
Course code: CEL4305
Course Title: Geotechnical Engineering I

Question No. 1. A Soil sample, consisting of particles of size ranging from 0.5 mm to 0.01 mm is
put on the surface of still water tank 5 meters deep. Calculate the time of settlement of the coarsest
and finest particles, to the bottom of the tank. Assume average specific gravity of soil particles as
2.66 and velocity of water as 0.01 poise. (N,U)

Question No. 2. A soil has a dry density of 1.816g in its natural condition. When 410 g of the soil
was poured in a vessel in a very loose state, its volume was 290 ml. The Same soil when vibrated
and compacted was found to have a volume of 215 ml. Determine relative density. (U,P)

Question No. 3. The grading of a soil gives the effective size as 0.14 mm, 30 percent finer size as
0.38 mm and 60 percent finer size is 0.80 mm. Find the Uniformity Coefficient and the Coefficient
of curvature. (R,U,P)

Question No. 4. An undisturbed saturated specimen of clay has a volume of 18.9 cm3 and a mass
of 30.2 g. On oven drying, the mass reduces to 18.0 g. The Volume of dry specimen as
determined by the displacement of mercury is 9.9 cm3. Determine Shrinkage limit, specific
gravity, shrinkage ratio and volumetric shrinkage. (U,P)

Question No. 5. The Atterberg limits of a clay soil are: Liquid Limit = 52%, Plastic Limit = 30%
and Shrinkage Limit = 18%. If the specimen of this soil shrinks from a volume of 24.2 cm 3 at the
shrinkage limit. Calculate the true specific gravity. (R,U,P)

Remembering(R); Understanding(U); Applying(P); Analyzing(N); Evaluating(E); Creating (C)
Question No. 6. A soil has a Liquid Limit of 25% and a flow index of 12.5%. If the Plastic Limit
is 15%, determine the plasticity index and toughness index.

If the water content of the soil in the natural condition in the field is 20%, find the liquidity index
and Relative consistency. (R,U,P)
