Type Approval Programme No. 1-504.1
Sec.1. Scope of Services – Page 5

1. Scope of Services
Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Type Approval is based on the ISO/IEC Guide 2 (2004) definition:
“Approval of conformity with specified requirements on the basis of systematic examination of one or more
specimens of a product representative of the production.”
The requirements are specified in Rules and/or standards referred to in this Type Approval programme.
This Type Approval programme outlines the procedure and conditions for obtaining, maintaining and renewing
a Type Approval. DNV Standard for Certification No. 1.2 (2009) describes the Type Approval in general.
Type Approved products will be listed in DNV's Register of Type Approved Products available on the DNV
Internet site at http://exchange.dnv.com/.

2. Procedure
The Type Approval procedure normally consists of the following steps:
— application for Type Approval
— quotation
— assessment of Type Approval documentation
— Initial Survey of product and production facilities including witnessing of Type Tests
— assessment of survey report and Type Test results
— issuance of Type Approval Certificates
— Certificate Retention Survey after two (2) years
— application for renewal after four (4) years.
Explained in detail:
2.1 Application for Type Approval
The Type Approval should be applied for in writing to DNV’s local office. The application shall include Type
Approval documentation as specified in section 3.
2.2 Quotation
A quotation will be given by DNV Responsible Approval Centre, to be confirmed by the client.
2.3 Assessment of Type Approval documentation
The Type Approval documentation is assessed by DNV Responsible Approval Centre to verify that it is in
conformity with the specified requirements.
2.4 Initial Survey of product and production facilities including witnessing of Type Tests
The objective of Initial Survey is to verify that the fabrication, quality control arrangement, product design,
material composition and the product marking is according to the Type Approval documentation.
The main elements of a DNV Initial Survey are to:
— ensure that fabrication and quality control arrangement are according to requirements as specified in
section 4.3 and as stated in Type Approval documentation submitted by manufacturer.
— witness Type Tests, as specified in section 4.4.
— ensure traceability between manufacturer’s product marking and the type designation as stated in the
application for Type Approval.
The objective of Type Tests is to verify the ability of the product to meet specified requirements by subjecting
the test sample to physical, chemical, environmental or operational stresses.
Type Tests as specified in section 4.4, are to be carried out and verified in one of the following ways:
— at a DNV laboratory
— at a recognised and independent laboratory accepted by DNV
— at the manufacturer’s premises in the presence of a DNV surveyor.
The Initial Survey report and Type Test results are to be submitted to DNV Responsible Approval Centre for
evaluation.
2.5 Assessment of survey report and Type Test results

2.6 Issuance of Type Approval Certificates

When the assessment of Type Approval documentation, Type Testing and survey of fabrication and quality
control arrangement is successfully completed a Type Approval Certificate will be issued to the manufacturer
of the product. The certificate is normally given a validity period of four (4) years, with a certificate retention
survey after two (2) years.
2.7 Certificate Retention Survey after two (2) years
The objective of the Certificate Retention Survey is to verify that the product design, material composition and
the product marking are not altered since issuance of the Type Approval Certificate.
Certificate Retention Survey is to be carried out two (2) years after issuance of Type Approval Certificate.
The main elements of the Certificate Retention Survey are to:
— ensure that Type Approval documentation is available.
— review design, materials, performance and production process (as specified in section 4.3) with respect to
possible changes, in order to ensure compliance with Type Approval documentation and/or referenced
material specifications.
— ensure traceability between manufacturer’s product marking and the DNV Type Approval Certificate as
stated in section 4.5.
— witness tests/inspection on factory samples, selected at random from the production line (where
practicable), or storage, if specified in section 4.4.
The Certificate Retention Survey report shall conclude that either:
a) the Type Approval Certificate shall be retained,
or
b) the Type Approval Certificate shall be modified/recalled due to the changes in the basis for approval.
The Certificate Retention Survey report shall be submitted to the manufacturer and to DNV Responsible
Approval Centre.
2.8 Application for renewal after four (4) years
Application for renewal should be submitted to DNV not later than three (3) months before expiry date of the
Type Approval Certificate.
The application shall include updated Type Approval documentation as specified in section 3, item 1-5. Items
6-11 shall be submitted if changes have been implemented since last issuance of the Type Approval.
Upon receipt of the application, DNV will perform a Renewal Survey with objective to verify that the product
design, material composition and the product marking are not altered since issuance of the Type Approval
Certificate.
Renewal Survey is to be carried out not later than four (4) years after issuance of the Type Approval Certificate.
The main elements of a Renewal Survey are the same as specified for the Certificate Retention Survey in
section 2.7.
If there, since last issuance of the Type Approval Certificate, has been any change in the relevant standards or
in DNV Rules, new assessment of product and Type Tests may be required.
The Renewal Survey report will constitute part of the basis for renewal of the Type Approval Certificate.

Type Approval Programme No. 1-504.1
Sec.4. Requirements – Page 8

4. Requirements
4.1 Basis for Type Approval
The Type Approval of synthetic fibre ropes is required in:
— DNV Rules for Classification of Ships, Pt.3 Ch.3 Sec.3
— DNV Rules for Classification of High Speed, Light Craft and Naval Surface Craft, Pt.3 Ch.5 Sec.3.
The Type Approval Certificate will state the following application areas;
“Mooring and Towing of Ships and HSLCs and Anchoring of HSLCs”, meaning:
— Mooring and Towing of Ships
— Mooring, Towing and Anchoring of HSLC.
This Type Approval Certificate does not cover fibre ropes for offshore moorings, for deep sea lifting nor SPM
Hawsers.
4.2 Scope of Type Approval
One DNV Type Approval Certificate will cover one grade of the actual product with the possibility to include
variants.
For synthetic fibre ropes this means:
— Grade: Ropes made of different fibres (e.g.: Polyamide, Polyester, Polypropylene, Polyethylene) are
considered different grades. In addition different qualities within each type of material are considered
different grades, e.g. different Polyethylene qualities (low density, high density, ultra high density, etc.)
will be considered different grades. Braided and laid ropes are also considered different grades.
— Variants: Different constructions (e.g.: 3-strand, 4-strand, 6-strand, etc.) and different dimensions
(diameters) are considered as variants.
One DNV Type Approval Certificate is limited to one manufacturer at one production site.
The following properties/information will be printed in the Type Approval Certificate:
— all types of constructions
— all dimensions or range of dimensions, e.g. diameter, circumference, etc.
— net mass per metre
— minimum breaking load
— the product standard/specification (ref. 4.4.1) to which the rope is found to comply
— test standard(s).
The Type Approval Programme covers only the rope itself, and only the aspects covered in the standards (as
listed in 4.4).
4.3 Requirements to production and quality control arrangement
The manufacturer shall have a quality system that meets ISO 9001 standards, or equivalent. If this quality
standard is not fulfilled, the extent of testing and surveys will be specially considered.
Quality control arrangement to be checked with respect to:
— control of incoming materials
— test equipment, test methods, test samples and reference to standards used
— traceability and marking system
— production test reports
— etc.
4.4 Requirements to material
The tests and requirements are to be in accordance with 4.4.1.
The Type Approval programme refers to various standards dependent on fibre rope material and quality.

polyolefin)
1) Others standards may be used, such as e.g.

- Manufacturer’s own specification of rope properties, accepted by the Society

- Other international or national rope specification standards, accepted by the Society
- OCIMF, 2000

Compliance with the applicable product standard(s), e.g. ISO 1140, OCIMF, Manufacturer’s Specification, etc.
will be stated on the front page of the Type Approval Certificate.
4.4.1.1 Manufacturer's Specification
If the rope is produced of a fibre or a construction which is not covered by one of the listed standards, a rope
specification is to be submitted by the manufacturer. The specification can be the manufacturer's specification,
accepted by DNV, including date and revision number, containing similar information as in:
a) The listed product standards (e.g. ISO 1140), i.e.:
— fibre specification
— construction
— net mass per metre, including tolerances
— dry breaking strength, shall be specified based on a satisfactory statistical basis, e.g. 10 full scale tests
(the manufacturer shall aim at specifying a minimum breaking strength equal to the lower 95%
confidence limit of the breaking strength).
or/and
b) OCIMF:
— fibre specification
— construction
— net mass per metre, including tolerances
— new dry breaking strength and
— new wet breaking strength, shall be specified based on a satisfactory statistical basis, e.g. 10 full scale
tests (the manufacturer shall aim at specifying a minimum breaking strength equal to the lower 95%
confidence limit of the breaking strength).
4.4.1.2 Other international or national standards
Such standards may be found acceptable after an evaluation by the Society. The language shall by English.
4.4.2 Extent of Type Testing
The manufacturer may choose to carry out testing according to one or more of the alternatives described below.
The extent of Type Testing for synthetic fibre ropes is as listed in Table 4-1.
The test report shall contain references to test procedures used and all test results.

Alternative 11):
Type Testing according to the following standards:
ISO 2307 (2010) Fibre Ropes - Determination of certain physical and mechanical properties
1)Others standards may be used, such as e.g.
- international or national rope test standards, accepted by the Society

DET NORSKE VERITAS AS

Standard for Certification - No. 2.9, January 2012
Type Approval Programme No. 1-504.1
Sec.4. Requirements – Page 10

For each rope diameter at least two samples are to be tested.

Ropes of two different diameters shall be subjected to testing for each type of rope subject to approval, one
with the largest diameter to be included in the Type Approval Certificate and one with a diameter representative
for the major part of the production.
If the ropes are divided into several ranges (due to different rope constructions) of diameters, the largest
diameter to be included in the Type Approval Certificate and one diameter in each of the smaller “designs” (i.e.
ranges) are to be tested.
The following tests and measurements according to ISO 2307 shall be included in the Type Testing:
— net mass per metre
— lay length
— plait pitch
— diameter and/or circumference
— breaking strength, and
— elongation.
Initial setting of the rope, inclusive splices, by cyclic loading prior to testing of breaking strength shall be
carried out in accordance with the test standard. Testing of breaking strength shall be carried out with a
monotonously increasing load until failure of the rope.
Any test piece which breaks outside the marks (i.e. in the splice area) is considered to comply with the tensile
strength specifications if the force recorded on breakage is not less than 90% of the minimum specified
breaking strength. The location of the failure and the breaking force recorded during the test shall be reported.

Alternative 2:
In addition to the above or as an alternative the manufacturer might elect to carry out testing according to e.g.:
— OCIMF, 2000.
If the ropes are divided into several ranges (due to different rope constructions) of diameters, the largest
diameter to be included in the Type Approval Certificate and one diameter in each of the smaller “designs” (i.e.
ranges) are to be tested.
Tests and measurements according to OCIMF cover the following items:
— New Dry Break Test (NDBS) 2)
— New Wet Break Test (NWBS) 2)
— Cyclic Load Test 3)
— Elongation and Extension Measurements.
2) Initial setting cycles prior to break test: Initial setting of the rope shall, after having been loaded to the reference load, be carried out by cycling the
rope ten times from the reference load to 50% of its estimated NDBS and NWBS, respectively, at a suitable loading rate not less than 5% of the overall
specimen length per minute with no rest between cycles.
3) Cyclic Load Test: The manufacturer might elect not to test this item. However, cyclic load testing is recommended for synthetic fibre ropes to be used
in applications subject to cyclic loading.

a) If cyclic load testing has not been carried out, the following will be added to the application text on the Type
Approval Certificate:
Cyclic load properties have not been verified.
b) If cyclic load testing has been carried out, and the results found to be satisfactory, the following will be
added to the application text on the Type Approval Certificate:
Cyclic load properties have been verified, and are listed in the certificate.
The results of the cyclic load testing will also be stated in the certificate.
The tests and requirements are to be in accordance with OCIMF, 2000.
If any other alternative test standards are requested to be used, the appropriate test programme has to be
evaluated by the Society provided the acceptance of the test standard has been given in advance.
4.4.3 Extent of testing at renewal
For all alternatives in 4.4.2, i.e. testing of fibre rope either based on ISO 2307, OCIMF or other standards, the
extent of testing at renewal is listed in Table 4-1.

For testing in connection with renewal at least one of the dimensions (diameters) to be tested shall be different
from the dimensions tested in connection with the Initial Type Approval, or at previous renewals.
Recent well documented tests (e.g. in connection with product certification, etc.) carried out by the
manufacturer might be considered partly or fully as an alternative to the above required testing at renewal.
