I.Introduction
1.1 Background and Rationale

Herbal medicines have many uses in the society but are not inspected in the same way as how
synthetic medicines are inspected. Therefore, the risks of using these medicines are still not fully to man.
A particular risk for herbal medicines is genetoxicity.

Genetoxicity is a toxic action occurring among the heritable chromosomes. This kind of toxic
action may be induced by some herbal medicine like Peperomiapellucida. P. pellucidais a common
tropical herb that is also often used in vegetables salads. It is said to cure eye inflammation or
conjunctivitis, coughing, fever, common colds, headache, stomachache, rheumatism, and there ailments.
(Extoqnet FAQs, 1998).

This study investigated the genetoxic property of pansit-pansitan(Peperomiapellucida) on root

apicalmeristems using Allium test. It specifically aimed to determine significant differences in macroscopic
parameters of genetoxic between the experimental and control group. Pansit-pansitan is an herbal
medicine believed to cure rheumatism, reduce uric in the body, relieve difficulty in breathing, and soothe
headache ad stomachache.

Onion bulbs of similar sizes were germinated for 48 hours. The roots developed were then
subjected to different concentrations of pansit-pansitan extracts obtained through decoction method.
Exposure to the treatments caused root growth inhabitation and color change on root tips-indications of
cell death along apical meristems. The researchers concluded that pansit-pansitan contains substances
that are genetoxic. The use of its curative property must be regulated further evaluated.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
This study aimed to answer the following:

1. In what phase of the pansit-pansitan decoction can we determine the genetoxic property of the plant
that can cause cancer?
2. What are the different genetoxic properties of pansit-pansitan?
3. How can we get the extract of pansit-pansitan?
4. How can we determine the genetoxicpropery of pansit-pansitan?

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.3.1 General Objective

To know the genetoxic property of pansit-pansitan.
1.3.2 Specific Objective
To determine the different genetoxic properties of pansit-pansitan(Peperomiapellucida)

1.4 Significance of the Study

This study aims to give more information to the people who are using this plant as a herbal
medicine. To let the people know that the use of this plant is limited.

1.5 Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study is limited only of the use of the pansit-pansitan. The pansit-pansitan is secured only in
damp places that is valued for its medicinal properties. The pansit-pansitan will be extracted. Its extract
will be used as eye-in flammation or conjunctivitis, coughing, fever, common colds, headache,
rheumatism, and other ailments. We have to use decoction to gain its extract
1.6 Definitions of terms
Allium. Any large genus of bulbous herbs of the lily family including the onion, garlic, chive, leek and
shallot.
Decoction. Boiling to extract essence.
Genetoxicity. Describesthe property of chemical agent that information within a cell causing mutations,
which may lead to cancer.
Pansit-pansitan.Herbal medicine, is a common plant that grows in damp places that is valued for its
medicinal properties.
Toxic.Containing or being poisonous material especially when of causing death or serious debilitation.
