MAFS.4.NF. 2.4
a. Understand a fraction a/b as a multiple of 1/b.
b. Understand a multiple of a/b as a multiple of 1/b, and use this understanding to multiply a
fraction by a whole number.
c. Solve word problems involving multiplication of a fraction by a whole number by using visual
fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
Essential Question: How can you write a product of a whole number and a fraction as a product of a
whole number and a unit fraction?
Students will be able to apply their understanding of whole number repeated addition and multiplication
to fractions.
 I am teaching this lesson to help my students learn how to multiply fractions by a whole number.
 I also chose to teach this lesson so that I could become more effective in math instruction.
I will know students have mastered my objective by seeing them work with manipulatives appropriately,
doing their work during the appropriate time, and by their ability to answer the exit ticket.
1. To begin the day, I plan to read a book about fractions.
2. After the read aloud, students will be asked to go back to their seats and get the supplies necessary for
the lesson (manipulative bucket for each table, their journals, etc.)
3. I will give an example of repeated addition using whole numbers and multiplication to help them
make the connection. (ex. 5 + 5 +5 is the same as 3x5 so ¼ x ¼ x ¼ is the same as 3 x ¼)
4. Next, I will pull up a math equation on the PowerPoint to display for them and give them some time to
try it out. Then, I will go over how to do it with them.
5. I will ask a few HOT questions.
6. A group work problem will be displayed and they will work at their tables to solve.
7. Students will answer an exit ticket question before leaving for me to check their understanding.
8. I will assign them problems 1-5 from their math books to do for homework to show their
understanding. (**This was suggested and approved by my CT)
