We Bought a Zoo!
(9th/10th grade Geometry)
Positive Reinforcements
1. Students will receive a tally (“dollar”) when they turn in assignments.
2. Students will “buy” a new type of animal at increments of $100 and create its enclosure.
3. After all of the animals have been purchased, students will assemble the zoo and construct the animals.
4. Students will receive a tally for each completed assignment that is turned in on time. Students typically
either pass their assignments to the front of their row to be collected or place their assignments in a tray on
my desk, so I can quickly count how many completed assignments have been turned in.
Teaching the Expected Behaviors: The class expectations for completing and turning in assignments were
established at the beginning of the year. To review and reinforce the expectations, I will model how to turn in an
assignment and students will practice the behavior using their current set of Warm-Ups.
Teaching the Plan: At the beginning of Unit 8 (Area & Perimeter), I will introduce the “We Bought a Zoo”
behavior contingency plan using the bulletin board. I will review the classroom expectations for turning in
assignments, and we will practice with turning in the current set of Warm-Ups. The class will earn one “dollar”
for each completed set of Warm-Ups that is turned in, and I will mark the progress on the white board (next to
the bulletin board). At the end of class, we will take a few minutes to review expectations and answer any
questions about the BCP.
For exhibits: Grid paper, scissors, color pencils or markers, specifications for area and perimeter of each exhibit
For animals: origami paper and directions OR snap cubes OR Legos
