Discussion:
Video: Tim Leberecht: 3 ways to (usefully) lose control of your brand
https://www.ted.com/talks/tim_leberecht_3_ways_to_usefully_lose_control_of_your_reputati
on
The days are past when a person, company or brand could tightly control their reputation —
online chatter and spin mean that if you're relevant, there's a constant, free-form conversation
happening about you that you have no control over. Tim Leberecht offers three big ideas
about accepting that loss of control, even designing for it — and using it as an impetus to
recommit to your values.

Instructions: Watch the Tedtalk described above. Briefly summarize the main points made by
the presenter.
In no more than 300 words outline how companies can use social media to leverage corporate
image and identify at least two challenges? Post to the discussion forum.

Research and Presentation

Activity: Scarpbook/ Chart:
“Image is a function of how the public perceive the organization based on all the messages it
sends out through names and logos and through self-preservation, including expressions of its
corporate vision. The public have certain perceptions about an organization before they begin
to interact with it. Perceptions are based on industry and what they have read about the
organization and what others have told about their interactions with the company.”
Identify two companies/ organizations one that you like a lot and another that you don’t like so
much. Collect information on each company (logo, press release, anecdotes, charity, values,
newspaper articles, and presence on social media) and use the information to create a
scrapbook of the organization.

Examine the information you have collected. After interacting with the organization, do you
have a different image of it than before? How so?
Capture your thoughts in a podcast of 1-2 minutes and post along with your scrapbook.
