ASSIGNMENT # 2
Submission Date: 13th April 2018

1. What is Communication, what is Telecommunication Communication tells?

2. Give at least 5 differences between Analogue and Digital Signals.
3. What is Modem, Internal Modem & External Modem? Which Modem or Card use
in laptop for communication?
4. What is Transmission Speed in terms of bps, kbps and mbps? How V.09 standards
maintain speed?
5. Define POTS terminology, what is the difference between ISDN & ASDL?
6. Breifly describe Cable Modem Network & Dishes Network.
7. What is Channel Transmission? Describe the differences in detail about Twisted
Pair (with types), Coaxial Cable, and Fiber Optic Cable.
Ans) A communication channel or simply channel refers either to a physical
transmission medium such as a wire, or to a logical connection over a multiplexed
medium such as a radio channel in telecommunications and computer networking.

8. How Transmission takes place through microwave, radio wave and satellites?

Ans) Microwave transmission also requires line of sight in order to work properly. In order to
allow two way communications two frequencies are used. However, this does not mean that
there has to be two antennas because the frequencies can be dealt with by one antenna at both
ends. The distance covered by microwave signals is based upon the height of the antenna. In
order to increase this coverage each antenna has a built-in repeater that regenerates the signal
before passing it on to the next antenna in line.

Radiowave transmit particles at different wavelengths and frequencies. This broad

range of wavelengths is known as the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum. The spectrum is
generally divided into seven regions in order of decreasing wavelength and increasing
energy and frequency.

9. Factor affecting channel speed?

10. What are frequency and bandwidth in terms of communication specify their units
also? Also explain point to point and multi point connection.
11. Discuss serial and parallel transmission.
12. What are synchronous and asynchronous transmission mode?
13. What are packet switching and circuit switching?
14. Define Multiplexing in Telecommunication.
15. What are Protocols? Name some basic protocols. Also just define TCP/IP , FTP,
SMTP and POP protocol.
16. What is LAN and its types?
17. Discuss the differences between LAN topologies (BUS, STAR, RING, MESH &
HYBRID).
18. How facsimile transmission, voice mail, electronic mail and video conference take
place?
19. What are Bridges, Hub, Switches, Routers and Gateways?
20. What is DNS and web addresses with their formats?

11. Discuss serial and parallel transmission.

Ans) In parallel transmission, multiple bits (usually 8 bits or a

byte/character) are sent simultaneously on different channels
(wires, frequency channels) within the same cable, or radio path,
and synchronized to a clock. Parallel devices have a wider data
bus than serial devices . The timing for parallel transmission is
provided by a constant clocking signal
In serial transmission, bits are sent sequentially on the same
channel (wire) which reduces costs for wire but also slows the
speed of transmission. Also, for serial transmission, some
overhead time is needed since bits must be assembled and sent as
a unit and then disassembled at the receiver.

12) What are synchronous and asynchronous transmission mode?

Ans) In synchronous transmission, groups of bits are combined into
frames and frames are sent continuously with or without data to be
transmitted.
In asynchronous transmission, groups of bits are sent as
independent units with start/stop flags and no data link
synchronization, to allow for arbitrary size gaps between frames.

13)What are packet switching and circuit switching?

Ans) In circuit switching, each data unit know the entire path address
which is provided by the source. In Circuit switching, data is
processed at source system only. Delay between data units in circuit
switching is uniform.
In Packet switching, each data unit just know the final destination
address intermediate path is decided by the routers. In Packet
switching, data is processed at all intermediate node including source
system. Delay between data units in packet switching is not uniform.
14. Define Multiplexing in Telecommunication.

Ans)In telecommunications and computer

networks, multiplexing (sometimes contracted to muxing) is a
method by which multiple analog or digital signals are
combined into one signal over a Shared medium The multiplexed
signal is transmitted over a communication channel such as a cable. The
multiplexing divides the capacity of the communication channel into several
logical channels, one for each message signal or data stream to be
transferred. A reverse process, known as demultiplexing, extracts the
original channels on the receiver end

15) What are Protocols? Name some basic protocols. Also just define TCP/IP ,
FTP, SMTP and POP protocol.
Ans) In computing, a protocol or communication protocol is a set of rules in which
computers communicate with each other. The protocol says what part of the
conversation comes at which time. Some basic protocols are
HTTP,ARP,DHCP,SMTP,FTP,POP

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is the language a computer

uses to access the internet.
The File Transfer Protocol is a standard network protocol used for the transfer of
computer files between a client and server on a computer network.
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is a standard communication protocol for sending
email messages on business networks and the Internet.
the Post Office Protocol is an application-layer Internet standard protocol used by e-mail
clients to retrieve e-mail from a server in an Internet Protocol network.

6. Breifly describe Cable Modem Network & Dishes Network.

Ans)
A cable modem is a hardware device that allows your computer
to communicate with an Internet Service Provider over a landline
connection. It converts an analog signal to a digital signal for the
purpose of granting access to broadband Internet. A cable
modem works by connecting a coaxial cable to a jack in the wall
and then a Cat5 (Ethernet) cord from the modem to a computer
or a network router. Network routers are used to share your
Internet connection between multiple computers.

Dish network is a Satellite television which is a service that delivers television programming to
viewers by relaying it from a communications satellite orbiting the Earth directly to the viewer's
location.[1] The signals are received via an outdoor parabolic antenna commonly referred to as
a satellite dish and a low-noise block downconverter.
A satellite receiver then decodes the desired television programme for viewing on a television set.
Receivers can be external set-top boxes, or a built-in television tuner. Satellite television provides a
wide range of channels and services. It is usually the only television available in many remote
geographic areas without terrestrial television or cable television service.
