Instruction Three-Phase Synchronous Generator

Worksheet 1 of 4 Open-Circuit and Short-Circuit Characteristics

VOC, ISC = f (IF) Experiment 5.1

Objective / Outcome:

 To recognise the synchronous generator operation.

 To determine the open-circuit and short-circuit characteristics of a synchronous
generator.

Procedure:

1. Establish the connections according to the diagram below.

2. Set the speed of the synchronous generator to its rated speed by adjusting the control
unit.

3. Then, measure the corresponding open-circuit voltage values by adjusting the

field/excitation current from 0 A until 4 A.

4. Turn off all equipments and modify the previous connections according to the diagram
below.

5. Set the speed of the synchronous generator to its rated speed by adjusting the control
unit.

6. Then, measure the corresponding short-circuit current values by adjusting the

field/excitation current from 0 A until 4 A.

7. Represent the open circuit voltage and short circuit current as functions of excitation
current in a single graph.

Instruction Three-Phase Synchronous Generator
Worksheet 3 of 4 Load Characteristics
VT, Pout = f (IL) Experiment 5.2

Objective / Outcome:

To determine the load characteristics of a synchronous generator operating alone.

Procedure:

1. Establish the connections according to the diagram below.

Worksheet 4 of 4 Load Characteristics
VT, Pout = f (IL) Experiment 5.2

2. Set the speed of the synchronous generator and field/excitation current to its rated
values by adjusting the control unit and DC voltage supply respectively.

3. Start the load resistance from 100% (maximum load) and inductive load at 6.0 H. Then,
adjust the load resistance until the power factor is as close as possible to 0.8 to
measure the terminal voltage/output voltage, line current and power factor from 0.8 H
until 6.0 H.

4. Calculate the output power of a single phase based on the measurements .

5. Represent terminal voltage/output voltage and output power as functions of line current
in a single graph. Indicate the rated power output on the graph.

Analysis and Discussion

Provide analysis and discussions based on the graph.

Calculation

The four-pole, 415-V, 50Hz, Y-connected synchronous generator in this experiment is

supplied with a field current of 4 A. At these settings you measured V OC, ISC, and given that
RA is 34 Ω, calculate the approximate synchronous reactance.

Conclusion

Provide comprehensive conclusion for these experiments.
