MANAGEMENT PLAN

Management Plan:

TEL 311 Signature Assignment

Daniel Carty

Arizona State University

MANAGEMENT PLAN

Classroom Layout:

This is my prototype classroom—the small red box is the door, and the thin red rectangle

is the whiteboard. The goal of this orientation is to create a familiar environment for the students

where they correlate learning with leisure. Six square desks are easily-arrangeable into a circle

for Socratic debate, and bookshelves/plush sitting space gives off a coffee shop/library vibe. This

provides the capacity for a structured learning environment while still holding the loose-knit

allure of a discussion-based English class.

What the diagram doesn’t show is the music; I plan on extensively involving music in my

classroom. For classroom analysis, and for pure listening leisure, I will keep a set of speakers

and a record player in my classroom. This inclusion had a greatly-positive effect on my class

when I was a high school student, so in an ongoing attempt to not ‘reinvent the wheel,’ I’m

taking a nod to my old government professor and including some analogue music.

MANAGEMENT PLAN

General Procedures

A. Beginning of period-When the period begins, students will take no longer than 30

seconds to find their seats and calm down for the lesson. Any food, cell phones, or

non-classroom objects are fine if they are neither loud nor distracting. I’ve chosen to

be lenient in this way to foster a more relaxed classroom with privileges that may be

revoked at will.

1. Attendance check-I will take attendance based on names, asking each student to

respond to my beckoning with ‘Present!’ This will break the social ice between

my students and myself, potentially warming them up socially for the lesson.

2. Previously absent students-They will be responsible for the material they missed

during their absence. I will provide it for them if they ask, but I’m not about the

business of babying the students.

3. Tardy students-If a student is two or three minutes late, they won’t be marked

tardy. If it becomes a habit, a plan will be worked out to get the student to class on

time. Reaching the 5-minute mark, though, earns the student a tardy.

4. Expected student behavior-Students will be respectful of their peers and teacher.

Quiet discussion is okay as long as it doesn’t interrupt the lesson, and the use of

phones/laptops is allowed so long as it does not distract them or their peers from

the lesson.

a. In the event of a discussion, debate, or argument, the students will be

encouraged to remain calm and orderly. If they become impassioned by the

material, though, they will be given a platform to discuss their outrage.

4
MANAGEMENT PLAN

B. Out-of-room policies-While representing the school when outside of the classroom,

students will be respectful of the institution but reserve the right to criticize it.

Negative opinions of the school (and this class) will be respected alongside positive

feedback.

C. Materials and equipment-For this class, students will require a notebook of loose

leaf paper, writing utensils, and any required reading materials for the curriculum.

1. What to bring to class-Students will bring the aforementioned required materials

to class every day.

2. Pencil sharpener-A sharpener will not be provided because this is a classroom,

not a cave. Nobody uses wooden pencils any more. If they do, they need to

evolve. Use a pen, or a mechanical pencil.

3. Other room equipment-Feel free to use anything in the room that isn’t a

personal object of mine. Touching speakers, record players, posters, or my

refrigerator will result in immediate banishment from the class.

D. Ending the period-Four minutes will be allotted at the end of each period for the

students to pack up and participate in a guided reflection on the lesson. The goal is to

foster discussion and connect classroom activities to extra-curricular events.

Seat-Work and Instruction Procedures

A. Student Attention-Students will give their attention to the instructor and anybody

providing direct instruction. In turn, they will pay attention to their peers during

group work and class discussion. Despite this expectation, the students will not be

punished for daydreaming or doodling—engagement is the educator’s

responsibility, so refocusing will be followed by steps to engage the student.

5
MANAGEMENT PLAN

B. Student participation-Students will share their opinions during class discussion.

This discourse is absolutely necessary in building the ideal classroom

environment, so non-compliance will not be accepted. The idea of ‘equal’

participation is a pipe dream, since groups of students will always be stratified

into those who are more social and those who aren’t, and therefore those who

participate more and those who participate less. Your grade for participation will

be given by me subjectively, based on my assessment of your social capability.

C. Seat-work procedures-Students will complete their in-class assignments

thoughtfully and entirely. If they cannot complete it in the allotted time, they must

set it aside and finish it later.

1. Talk among students-Students can talk with one another when

working in groups, as long as they are completing their work. I don’t

mind if the conversation strays, but if you’re not working while you’re

talking about some unrelated topic, I’m going to move you.

2. Obtaining help-I will come to students that raise their hand for

assistance. I will spend much of my down time circulating the

classroom, managing the students’ collective attention span and

offering help where it is needed.

3. Out of seat-Students may roam when they must. It can’t be

distracting, and it can’t be constant. I won’t chain you to your seat, but

don’t disrespect my authority by abusing this privilege.

6
MANAGEMENT PLAN

4. When seat work has been completed-Walk around, talk quietly, but

don’t distract the students who are still working. Go to the back of the

class if you must, but keep quiet and try not to ‘spaz out.’

Student Group Work

A. Use of materials and supplies-Students will come to class prepared

with their contributing materials and supplies.

B. Assignment of students to groups-For structured assignments and

presentations, students will be allowed to choose their own groups.

However, they are not allowed to be in a group with the same people

twice. The student must keenly budget their supply of smart kids to be

successful and avoid doing all the work. This being said, though, I

reserve the right to assign groups for special projects.

C. Student participation and behavior-Students are expected to

participate equally in groups. If their peers shirk their duties, they are

encouraged to snitch on them to the teacher. Punishment will be swift

and without remorse.

Miscellaneous

A. Signals-If the noise in the classroom gets out of hand, I will write

down student names on the whiteboard. After class, I will address

them individually and tell them to be responsible about their image

in the classroom.
7
MANAGEMENT PLAN

B. Behavior during interruptions-Students will remain stock-still

and quiet as Winter when the class is interrupted. Any noise gets a

verbal reaming in the future.

C. Special equipment-Students will respect special equipment and

fear the repercussions should anything happen to it. The equipment

will have a sign-out sheet.

D. Fire and disaster drills-Students will work together and exercise

extreme caution during emergency situations. Talking will be kept

to a minimum, and I will check the hallway before leading my

students to safety.

E. Split lunch period-Students may leave their belongings in my

classroom while they go to lunch. Extra leniency will be given to

students seeking bathroom breaks in the period directly after lunch.

Respect your teacher and your peers. This isn’t that serious. It’s a high school

each other. We’re all on this ride
together.
