WELCOME
It is my pleasure, as Managing Director of Total Rugby, to welcome Scott and his
touring group to New Zealand. We are delighted to have you once again playing
rugby and enjoying our hospitality in 2018. Welcome, Haere Mai, and enjoy your
stay.
INTRODUCTORY NOTES
Weather: September ..... is late winter / spring weather, which means it can be
very changeable. Temperatures can fluctuate but it is likely to still be cold. You
will need to come prepared for a full winter blast which could see temperatures
drop below zero Celsius.
Grounds: Grounds are likely to be soft and may still be recovering from the
winter rains. Expect the worse! Multi-studded boots and blades will generally not
work on these grounds. Medium or long length studs are best.
Game protocol: Most schools in New Zealand have their own haka and it is
common practice for the host school to perform the haka for overseas visiting
teams. This is meant as a challenge and it is up to the visiting team to accept it
as they wish. Generally, the team facing the challenge will line up on their own
10m line and ‘front up’. This is seen as the most respectful. Three cheers are
performed at the end of the match and players shake hands with the opposition.
Rugby Rules: Crutch binding in the scrums and lifting in the lineout is permitted
in New Zealand age group rugby.
Ice: Ice for sideline treatment of injuries is available from nearly all service
stations and supermarkets. It is recommended that teams bring an insulated
container for storing ice at matches.
First Aid: It is not compulsory to have a first aid officer at every game as it is in
Australia. Initial first aid is generally administered by coaching and/or
management staff. Emergency services are available for more serious injuries.
The emergency number in New Zealand is 111. There are after-hours medical
services available in all main centres. Total Rugby will assist with coordinating
medical services including physiotherapy. It is expected that tour groups will
have their own travel insurance to cover medical expenses. Operators of tourist
services have their own policies regarding health and safety and issues arising
should be managed directly with them.
Equipment: Total Rugby has a number of training balls available. Please make
an early request for other specific equipment if required as it is possible to
source a range of gear.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included daily throughout your itinerary.
Breakfasts will all be at your accommodation and are continental (typically
cereal, toast and spreads, tea/coffee), lunches are packed and are provided at
your accommodation to be collected each day as you leave breakfast, dinners
are two course (main course and dessert) or buffet style.
Itinerary Times: All the times shown on this itinerary have been booked and
confirmed with the accommodation providers and activity operators. For meal
time changes please liaise directly with the hotel. If you wish to change timings
for any activities or find you are running behind schedule please contact Total
Rugby so that we can inform the operator
Vouchers: On your arrival your tour leader will be given a voucher booklet
containing the vouchers you will be required to hand over to our operators for
the various activities included in your tour.
Liaison: Total Rugby staff will be available 24 hours. Please use the cell phone
numbers on this page. Our staff will not always be with you during your
activities but we will check in with you each day, either in the evening to discuss
the day’s events and go over the next day, or in the morning.
Rugby Boots: New Zealand has very strict biosecurity regulations, during your
flight please complete the Passenger Arrival Card supplied by the airline with
care and ensure rugby boots are clean prior to your departure.
Insurance: You are expected to have your own insurance to cover the cost of
serious injury or other misfortunes. Please see Terms and Conditions on Total
Rugby Invoice.
Mobile Phone: Total Rugby will provide you with a complimentary mobile phone
with a NZ sim card and calling credit while you are in NZ. This will enable you to
call our numbers for no cost and also ensure you can call the NZ emergency
number.

Christchurch RC and then had the reins with the Canterbury U15, U18
and U21 sides. Next step was with the Crusader Knights and also the

Josh McKay
Josh is a born and bred Canterbury man. He attended
Christchurch Boys’ High School and played in the 10
position for most of his schoolboy rugby. His big step up
came with the NZ U20 squad which won the World Cup in
2017. His post-school club is Lincoln University which
were Div 1 winners in 2016, 2017 and 2018. He is
currently playing for Canterbury as a wing and has
secured a two year contract with the Highlanders. He
made his Super Rugby debut against the Reds this year.
Mitchell Drumond
Mitchell made his first provincial rugby appearance as a
19 year old for the 2013 ITM Cup Canterbury squad. He
remained in the squad for the 2014 season where he
earned 10 caps. This increased to every game in the
2015 season where Canterbury won the title. This
wasn’t to be the case in 2016 though as an early season
broken leg in a training accident resulted in only three
games for the year. His Super Rugby career started in
2014 with his debut for the Crusaders against the
Rebels. He had a much larger role to play in 2015 with
15 caps. In 2016 Mitchell scored 4 tries in 13 games. He
was an integral member of the title winning Crusaders in both 2017 and
2018. Internationally, Mitchell has a wealth of experience starting with
the NZ Barbarians secondary schools team in 2012. He was member of
the NZ U20 in 2014. He played for the Barbarians in 2017 coming off the
bench to play against the All Blacks. 10 days later he made his debut for
the All Blacks against a French XV.

KO TANE
Welcome to Ko Tane Living Maori Village at
Willowbank Wildlife Reserve , Christchurch,
where Maori culture and conservation meet
to give a unique glimpse into the way of life
of the South Island Ngai Tahu Maori people
before the arrival of the Europeans.
Experience the thrill of the wero, the
traditional challenge to visitors, as you are
brought into the sacred precinct of Tane, Maori God of the Forests. Hear
the haunting traditional call, the Karanga, performed by a wahine
(woman) as the powhiri (ritual of arrival) begins,
allowing you to enter our hidden enclave. Listen to a
tane (male) explain the customs of the Ngai Tahu
tribe as you visit the Living Village and witness an
ancient way of life where Maori struggled to survive
in the harsh conditions of the most southerly of the
Polynesian Pacific Islands. Learn about the coming of
the Pakeha (fair-skinned ones), the changes Maori
were forced to make from their traditional way of life
and how the culture has grown and adapted as a
result. Join in the laughter as you take part in a
performance of the haka (men) or the poi dance
(women), and be entertained by the songs and
games performed by the kapa haka (Maori cultural
performance) group. Take a guided New
Zealand nature tour and get close to kiwi, kea and
other native species housed in sensitively purpose-
built environments. Enjoy a traditional hangi dinner included in the
