Circular measure problem solving exercise

1 The diagram shows two concentric circles.

The larger circle has a radius of 8 cm.
The smaller circle has a radius of 6

cm. Find the shaded area.

2 The diagram shows a sector cut from a circle with centre O and radius 13
cm. The points P and Q lie on the circumference of the circle.
The chord PQ is 24 cm.
Find
(i) the area of the shaded segment,

(ii) the perimeter of the shaded segment.

3 The diagram shows a circle, centre O, radius r cm.
A and B are points on the circumference of the circle.
Angle AOB =  radians.

(i) State the length of the arc AB when r = 6

cm and  = 1 radian.

(ii) Find the length of the radius when the arc AB = 12 cm and  = 1.5
radians.

(iii) Find the unshaded area when r = 5 cm and the arc length = 7 cm.

(iv) Find the shaded area when r = 10 cm and the arc length = 9 cm.

4 Points A and B lie on the circumference of a circle of radius 10 cm and
are such that the arc AB is 8 cm.

Find the length of the chord AB.

5 The diagram shows the cross-section of a 1-metre long pipe which is partly
filled with water.

The radius of the cross-section is 10 cm.

Find the volume of water in the pipe when the chord AB is 10 cm.

6 The diagram shows the sector of a circle with centre O and radius r cm.

(i) Find and simplify an expression, in terms of r, for

(a) the area of the shaded sector,

(b) the perimeter of the shaded sector.

(ii) Find the value of r when the perimeter of the shaded sector is exactly
(5 + 8) cm.
