A Flow Metering Solution for harsh service, highly viscous, slurry type, or
contaminated primary line fluid applications (but ideal for conventional
liquid, gas and steam applications as well!)
Introduction
In the public domain for over fifty years, the Wedge meter has served in numerous applications, however due to the unique
nature of the Wedge meter design, it has been found to be particularly useful in applications characteristically involving
harsh, contaminated, high viscosity, air or particulate entrained line fluids such as sewage, steam, tar sands, molasses,
cement, and petroleum products.
Primary Flow Signal, Inc. offers the PFS WedgetypeTM flow meter in a selection of configurations, line sizes, pressure
ratings and material selection to bracket a broad cross section of installation and application requirements. In all
instances, Primary Flow Signal, Inc.
brings decades of design, engineering,
manufacturing and innovation expertise,
experience and leadership to this
important and useful line of flow
measurement devices.
General Information
The operating principal of the PFS WedgetypeTM flow meter is The opening height of the wedge can be changed in design

this case a sloping “wedge” is related to the
velocity of the flow passing through the

Pressure taps are located upstream and
downstream from a “vee” shaped constriction
placed in a length of pipe. The constriction FLOW
creates a pressure drop between the H
upstream tap and downstream tap which is
related to the velocity in the pipe line, and
thus, inferentially, to the volumetric flow rate

Materials of construction may be selected from any commercially available flange material with
surface finishes to coordinate with service requirements. The tap arrangement is designed to
penetrate the flange and reach the inside diameter of the flow element. Internal NPT threading is
typical, but again, subject to the constraints imposed by bolt pattern, virtually any tap threading, or
welded couplings can be incorporated as required.

This style, when utilized with remote seal sensors for the secondary
instrumentation, is particularly effective in measurement of line fluids
characterized by high or changing viscosity, slurry type, and/or containing
solids in suspension, that are typically difficult to handle based on plugging
experienced with conventional type tap arrangements. This meter style in
association with appropriate sealed sensors is ideal for hazardous materials,
where collection of the hazardous line fluid in the impulse lines would be
unacceptable.
