Lesson Idea Name: Weather

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S1E1Students will observe, measure, and communicate weather data to see patterns in weather and climate.
a. Identify different types of weather and the characteristics of each type.
b. Investigate weather by observing, measuring with simple weather instruments (thermometer, wind vane,
rain gauge), and recording weather data (temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) in a
periodic journal or on a calendar seasonally.
c. Correlate weather data (temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) to seasonal
changes.

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE 3. Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool:

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☒ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This is a versatile lesson because I have an audio for the students to get introduced to the lesson. Students
have a visual of the audio as well if they need to read the script instead of listen to it. The screen is in front of
the students making it easier for them to view.

Lesson idea implementation:

TW will turn students to the prerecorded audio
TW gather students around the carpet area
TW say “Hmmm.. students every morning when I pick out what I am going to wear I think about one big thing.
Can you guess what it is?”
TW allow students to make some guesses
TS well if it was raining today do you think you would want to wear something different than what you wore
today? Today we are going to start a unit on weather!!
TW say “Boys and girls for the next week we will be paying close attention to what the weather looks like this
week.”
TS do we know what the types of weather are?
Allow for student responses.
TW call upon a student to look outside and tell me what the weather is outside and what kind of tools they
used to figure it out

TW display chart

TS I will be posting this chart on our class blog for you to collaborate on each day you will be posting a picture
of what you think the weather is that day
TW give the students the following sentence frame to complete at home on the blog page under flipped
classroom after each day we observe
“Today the weather is______, I knew this because________. I predict the weather will be ______ tomorrow.”
After we have completed a week of weather observations we will take graph the data
 Students will be assessed based on their collaboration to the online clog each week and their
collaboration each day with collecting the data
 Feedback for students will be given to students on the flipped classroom blog
Importance of technology:
Technology gages the students interest. This will be a great tool for the students to use the second week of
the observations because they can refer to the prior week and be able to enter in their own observations at
home. The data that we are gathering each data on the weather and if there are certain weather patterns
would be lost. This lesson also requires students to listen to the audio message I have prerecorded for the
students.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Proper education should be given to students to safety use prior to any involvement with the flipped
classroom. Students are required to send home parent permission forms home and have them signed by their
parents. Teacher should monitor students feedback and collaboration with other students ensuring students
are being friendly and to make sure students are aware of a zero tolerance policy of cyberbullying.

Reflective Practice:
Each student could be required to present at the end of the unit on the observations they made and the data
they collected. This activity allows the students to become more aware with the environment. This activity is
encouraging for student to do work at home and makes it fun at the same. This activity is meant to be used to
introduce weather and we will dive deeper into the standards after we get a feel for weather and what
observations look like with weather. Extend the lesson to longer than two weeks. Have students observe for 3
weeks to a month. Extend upon the lesson by having students observe things such as moon phases, etc.
Students could create a weebly, PowerPoint, etc. to present their ideas.
