President Dianne Wilson opened the

meeting with a robust ring of the bell.
Mike McCluer, giving the Thought of the
Day, offered various quotes extolling
changes in behavior as the situation
requires, presumably for both individuals
and organizations. The lone guest at the
meeting was our speaker, Adam
Plantinga.

Lots of happy people today! Michele
Robbins gave a High Five and said that
she will be ordained by the United
Methodist Church in a few months. .Vickie
Devlin announced that her granddaughter
has a job and will no longer be living with
Vickie, but will continue to do laundry at
Vickie’s house. . . .
President Dianne gave a High Five for
the excellent work by Rich Render and
Roger Gregory to draft a modified set of
Club bylaws to allow the proposed
Business Members. . . . .Mike McCluer
suggested that we have a Club Assembly
soon to discuss long term goals for the
Club.
 ~~STORY TIME~~
Gary Irwin told the story of his brief career
with the Kansas City A’s, where he mostly
watched the games as a member of the
tarp crew. Visiting baseball players
sometimes had to sit on the tarp crew
bench after a comfort stop at the visitors’
clubhouse during a game, and one sat
next to Gary. Was it Stan Musial or Ted
Williams? Debbie Koo, relying on
knowledgeable friends nearby, correctly
guessed the Splendid Splinter (Ted), but
shared the Cowboy Cookies with Gary and
the rest of her table.
~~ANNOUNCEMENTS~~
Rich Render announced the E-waste
collection project on Saturday, April 28,
and Tony Schoemehl announced the
Field Day on Wednesday May 9, and both
announced that they would pass around
job signup sheets next week. . . . . Gary
Irwin announced the Community Faire
booth would be on Saturday, May 12, but
that Rotarians could actually signup this
week. He passed around his trusty
clipboard with signup sheet on it, and filled
all the jobs immediately!
Angelo Costanza announced that our two
Camp Royal campers have been
approved, and that they will attend a
Rotary meeting soon. He also announced
that Bocce Bash participants must now
pay their share of the entry fee, to be
determined. He has also extended his
defense practice to the Veterans
Treatment Court, where all the judges are
his friends and his client wasn’t forced to
SCRAM (a bad thing, evidently).
The raffle winner was Mike McCluer, who
groped most of the marbles but missed the
greenie, and had to settle for the $10
consolation prize.
~~PROGRAM~~
Our speaker today was Moraga resident
Adam Plantinga, an active member of the
San Francisco Police Department who has
written the book 400 Things Cops Know.
He has been interested in police work
since he was a child. He was first on the
Milwaukee police force for the first seven
years of his career, but followed a girl to
the San Francisco area and joined the
SFPD there. They married and have two
daughters.
Adam has served the SFPD on patrol, as
a detective, and on the vice squad, where,
as a minister’s son, he was particularly
incompetent as an effective undercover
agent.
His book is an insider’s view of law
enforcement, and it hopes readers will get
a better appreciation of police officers. He
knows the system is far from perfect, but is
glad the system works as well as it does.
