UNIT PLAN: Individual, Family and Society

TOPIC OF LESSON: Contemporary Social Issues that Influence the Caribbean Family Life

PRE – KNOWLEDGE: Students studied about the individual and the family and their place

in society. Students will also have experiences of contemporary social issues that influence

their family life.

OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to:

1. Derive a definition for the term contemporary social issue.

2. Identify examples of contemporary social issues that influence the Caribbean family

life. (Cognitive-Remembering)

3. Describe the causes and effects of social issues that influence the Caribbean Family

life. (Cognitive-Analysis)

4. Participate in class discussions about the term contemporary social issues and types of

contemporary social issues. (Affective-Respond)


5. Participate in class discussions about the term contemporary social issues and types

6. Listen to others with respect by remaining silent when another student is making their

oral contribution. (Affective-Receiving)

SET INDUCTION: Time allotted (3 mins)

The teacher will enter the classroom wearing a school uniform while holding a child’s toy. She

will recite the lyrics of Queen Ifrika’s song entitled “Daddy” (see attachment). The monologue

rendered will be on the contemporary social issue, incest.

SECTION 1 – Time allotted 30 mins


Teaching points:
1. The word ‘contemporary’ means occurring at the time of writing or speaking. Clearly
the social issues that are of concern to people are changing all the time.
2. A social issue can best be described as any condition that is widespread and conflicts
with the norms and values of the society that affects a large number of people both
directly and indirectly.
3. Examples of contemporary social issues that influence Caribbean family life includes
incest, prostitution, crime, poverty and domestic abuse/violence.
4. The causes of effects of the aforementioned contemporary social issues will be
described.
