Unit Title: Plotting Your World Name: Mr. Brandon Amaral

Content Area: Mathematics I Grade Level: 9-12
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
Mathematics I S-ID 1, 2, 3
1. Represent data with plots on the real number line (dot plots, histograms, and box plots).

2. Use statistics appropriate to the shape of the data distribution to compare center (median, mean) and spread (interquartile
range, standard deviation) of two or more different data sets.

3. Interpret differences in shape, center, and spread in the context of the data sets, accounting for possible effects of extreme
data points (outliers)

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will be able to:
 Create plots from sets of data.
 Read and compare information from multiple plots.
 Contextually interpret differences in plots as they apply to the data represented.
Unit Summary:
Students will learn key meanings and applications of descriptive statistics, particularly in the context of dot plots, histograms, and box plots. Students will apply these
statistics in creating, reading, and interpreting plots. Students will understand which plots are most appropriate for displaying particular data sets, and use this knowledge
to plot and interpret their own unique data sets recorded from their everyday lives.
