ECGR 4122/5190 Acoustics – Take home question – Worth 50% of 2nd exam – Version 2

A kettledrum consists of a circular membrane of diameter “D” with an area density of ρS. The
membrane is stretched under tension of T and covers a backing vessel of volume V0. See the
table on the next page for the values to use. Each person has different values and will get
different answers. Assume 3 significant figures for everything.
(a) (10 points) Use equation 6.1 to calculate the wave speed “c” for waves on the
membrane. Use equation 6.20 to determine what the fundamental frequency of the
membrane would be without a backing vessel.
(b) (10 points) Assume the backing vessel of the kettledrum is a hemispherical bowl of
radius D/2. The vessel is filled with air at a pressure of 100 kPa and γ (the ratio of
specific heats) is 1.4. See page 122 in Raichel and page 60 in the class notes. Calculate
the value of “B”.
(c) (10 points) Use Origin to plot J0(ka) from ka=0 to ka=4.00 in steps of 0.01. On the same
graph, plot -B*J2(ka)/(ka)2 from ka=0 to ka=4.00 in steps of 0.01. Attach the graph and
the spreadsheet. Note: Tables of the values of Bessel functions J0(x) and J2(x) can be
copied from https://keisan.casio.com/exec/system/1180573470 and pasted into Origin.
(d) (10 points) Find the value of ka where the two lines intersect on the graph. Verify using
the data in the spreadsheet.
(e) (10 points) From this value of ka, determine the fundamental frequency for the
membrane with the backing vessel. Submit the final results along with the section of
spreadsheet and the graph to support your result.
For example, the answers for problem 6.8 in the book are c=100 m/s, B=5.25, ka=3.05 and
f=194 Hz, and the graph and spreadsheet are shown below.
