Ready for Life and Work

This task prepares students for a very common task in many workplaces, which is to
independently search for and evaluate information using a variety of databases and
publications.

Assessment Details
Economic and political reforms under Đổi Mới, launched in 1986, have spurred rapid
economic growth and development and transformed Vietnam from one of the world’s poorest
nations to a lower middle-income country. Some other ASEAN member states have also had
favourable development trajectories, while others have been less dynamic. Your task is to
search for and present some relevant indicators for Vietnam and one other ASEAN country
of your choice (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines,
Singapore or Thailand).

1. Search relevant and reliable websites to find and present the following
information:
i. [10 points] Compare
a. per capita GDP (US$ and PPP$),
b. GDP growth rates and
c. per capita GDP growth rates from 1985 to 2015 in Vietnam and one other
ASEAN country. Illustrate your findings with tables and/or graphs. How do these
figures compare with the world and/or OECD averages?
ii. [5 points] Discuss the 30-year growth experience of Vietnam and the other country,
paying particular attention to problems associated with inflation (as measured by the
CPI or GDP deflator), and real rates of savings and investment.
iii. [5 points] To what extent has economic growth affected other development indicators
such as those included in the Human Development Index? (Note: compare Vietnam
with one other ASEAN country.)
iv. [5 points] Discuss in a hypothetical way whether you think Vietnam or the other
ASEAN country has been affected by macroeconomic problems (between 1985 and
2015) such as high and/or unpredictable inflation, involuntary unemployment and/or
insufficient aggregate demand.
