Abstract:
Class I biprotrusion individuals generally present extremely convex profile considering the esthetic
standards due to incisive and lip protrusion. The biprotrusion reduction by positioning the teeth in the
basal bone improves esthetics and function, even though, requires first premolar extractions in a great
number of cases. The purpose of this survey was to evaluate the incisive retraction and its influence on
the facial profile of biprotusives patients. Lateral cephalometric radiographies of 20 Class I biprotrusion
patients were used. All of them were treated with Edgewise Standard System and extraction of first
premolars at the UFRJ Orthodontic Post graduation Course. Cephalometric tracings were obtained at
the beginning and at the end of the therapy to obtain the cephalometric measurements: ANB, 1.NA,
1-NA, 1.NB, 1-NB, 1.1, S-LS, S-LI. Data comparison showed significant difference (p<0.05) among pre
and post measures that evaluate incisive and lip position. Positive correlation was observed between
superior lip position and superior incisive position, as well as inferior lip position is correlated with in-
ferior incisive position. It was concluded that an expressive relation exists between the anterior teeth
and facial profile changes.
