License Plate (LP) Receive – Vendor Manual (EDI)

What is License Plate (LP) Receive?

LP Receive is an industry-wide inbound process where multiple items are received by scanning a barcode known as SSCC (Serialized
Shipment Container Code) placed on the outside every carton, thus eliminating the need to open the carton and scan each item
individually. LP receive is possible when the unique SSCC reference sent in your Advance Shipment Notification (ASN - DESADV)
matches the SSCC number in the barcode.

What are the benefits when using LP Receive?

The LP receive process helps achieving improved efficiency, better shipment visibility and a more accurate receive. It is a reflection of
strategic partnership between Amazon and vendors. Some of the benefits include:
 Higher invoice accuracy. There are less Purchase Quantity Variances (PQV) seen with vendors operating on LP Receive.
 Cleaner open order book. Improving the knowledge of what is coming eases Amazon’s order planning. This translates to
higher availability and more sales for both Amazon and our vendor partners.
 Improved overall vendor lead time. Supports faster receiving as this method is one touch scanning.
 Problem Receive errors prevention. Problem Receive occurs when deliveries happen and it is not clear in our system against
which purchase order we should receive your stock. Consuming ASN information reduces this risk, as we receive exactly as
vendors are instructing us.
 Less resources. Less problems means less hours spent by both Amazon and vendors investigating issues post-delivery.

What are the requirements for enabling EDI LP Receive?

Currently, vendors need to meet the following requirements before their shipments can be LP received:
 Be EDI-enabled. Up and running ASN through the EDI DESADV message (dispatch advice) for all deliveries.
 Able to deliver multiple items in one master carton.
 The physical shipment should have the GS1-128 labels with the SSCC barcode on every carton.
 The SSCC should also be sent in the ASN EDI DESADV. The SSCC numbers in the ASN should match what is in the shipment.
 ASN should have accurate carton level information (PO, ASIN, quantity of the items in the carton)
 If a distributor is used to deliver your goods, they should ensure that LP enabled products arrive always in separate pallets
than non-LP enabled products.

What are the steps to be certified as an LP enabled vendor?

1. Apply all the necessary changes to comply with LP in your DESADV by including a valid Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC)
in Segment GIN+BJ. Please refer to the DESADV folder within the ‘Amazon EDI Specification Package’ in the Resource Centre
on Vendor Central.
2. Ensure you have the capability of generating SSCC GS1-128 labels which are aligned with the SSCC provided in your DESADV.
3. Open a Contact Us case in Vendor Central (support topic: Shipments) informing us that:
a. Your EDIFACT DESADV message has been updated to the required specification
b. Your labeling system is capable of creating SSCC labels which link to the correct EDI message

I am not EDI enabled, will I be able to do LP?

First, we strongly advise you to make plan to implement EDI system and process. If you are not EDI vendor, you can provide carton
content information at ASN creation stage in Vendor Central and apply AMZNCC labels on every carton. For more information on LP
via Vendor Central, please refer to the vendor central help pages - VC > help > Shipments > Shipment troubleshooting.

Labeling Requirements
 Each carton must have a Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) label in compliance with GS1-128 standards. Refer to www.
gs1us.org for further information on UCC standards and implementation.
 Each SSCC label should contain the following: The words “SSCC”, the numeric SSCC (in case the barcode doesn’t scan) and a
scan-able SSCC-18 barcode preceded by the two leading 00s as the application identifier (in total 20 digits).
 SSCC labels should not be placed on the top of the carton and should be at least 2.5 cm from the edges of the carton. The
label should not be placed over a carton seam, or in a place where it might become obstructed by tape or another label,
rendering it not scan-able.

Mismatch between The GIN+BJ segment in the EDI DESADV is not 1. Make sure to provide a perfect match
physical SSCC and SSCC perfectly matching the physical SSCC on the parcel between GIN+BJ segment and physical

2. In particular, if your physical SSCC is
starting with 00 followed by 18 digits, we
expect both 00 and 18 digits in the DESADV
GIN+BJ segment, and not only the 18 digits

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is an SSCC?
SSCC stands for Serialized Ship Container Code, which is a 20-digit number used to identify logistics unit used in LP Receive. These
20 digits need to be fully reported within your ASN message in the GIN+BJ segment (see below Technical Guide)
2. Can multiple ASINs or multiple POs be sent in one carton?
Yes, mixed ASINs and mixed POs are allowed in the same box, and they should all tie to the unique SSCC assigned for the box (as
well as the same SSCC code in the ASN).
3. Is LP a mandatory requirement now?
In order for products to be received quicker and more accurately into Amazon’s fulfilment centres, vendors are required to provide
Amazon with carton content information. Carton content information can be provided in several formats including Vendor Central
generated AMZNCC barcodes and EDI related SSCC barcodes.
4. Is there chargeback for not doing LP?
Currently there is no direct chargeback for LP non-compliances. There are existing chargebacks for certain violations impacting LP
receive, such as no ASN and late ASN. The complete list of chargebacks and their rates is available in Vendor Central Help pages
under Vendor Operational Performance (Chargebacks) and any new charge will be informed to vendors.
5. Do I need to keep applying ASN/shipping labels if I apply License Plate SSCCs?
Aside from carton content labels, vendors are required to provide shipment level identifiers on every carton shipped to Amazon.
At least one of the below two options has to be met:
Option 1 (preferred): ASN/BOL# in text & barcode
 For vendors printing labels via Vendor Central, an ASN Shipping Label can be printed at the end of ASN creation process or
going to Shipments > View past shipments > Completed shipments > click on Actions > click on Shipping label.
 For vendors using their own labelling systems, ASN number should be printed in text and barcode formats, including the ASN
prefix. Example: For ASN=123456, the label should show text “ASN: 123456” and scan-able barcode “ASN123456”. Note: For
EDI DESADV enabled vendors, the above requirement applies with their BOL number instead of the Vendor Central ASN.
Example: For BOL=123456, the label should show text “ASN: 123456” and barcode “ASN123456”.
Option 2: PO#: List of all PO#s both in text & barcode
 List of all POs contained in the carton should be visible in both text and barcode.
