GLOBAL WARMING

Global warming is a brutal and urgent reality...the greatest threat

hanging over the future of mankind. “A great nation like the United
States has the duty to not obstruct the fight against global warming but,
on the contrary, to head this struggle because what is at stake is the
future of all humanity.”Actually global warming is observed increase in
avg temperature of earth’s atmosphere n oceans in recent decades. The
earth’s avg near-surface atmospheric temperature rose 0.6+0.2celcius in
20th century.

Causes:
“Most of the observed increase in globally averaged
temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely [90%] due to the
observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations.”
There is an international scientific consensus that most of the warming
observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human causes.”

Green house gases like co2,methane,cfc’s etc are the main causes of
global warming. these green house gases are capable of trapping the
sun’s heat radiations that are being reflected by earth’s surface. This
results in increased heating up of atmosphere.

These green house gases increases global warming in another prospect

too. i.e gases like cfc,s n co2 can deplete ozone layer, which results more
solar rays coming to earth straight away.

CAUSES LEADING TO EMISSION OF GREEN HOSE GASES:

 Humans have increased carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere by

more than 37% since the Industrial Revolution.

 Vehicular emissions are chief sources of green house gases

 Industrial emissions also contribute to gb warming

 Considerable amounts of cfc emitted by refridgerators also

contribute to gb warming.

CONSEQUENCES:

Some consequences of global warming are

• MELTING OF SEA ICE

In September 2007 an area the size of Florida (69,000 square miles) melted in six
days
Due to heating of atmosphere, the sea ice melts which will
increase sea level that might cause submerging of many islands.
some impacts of this global warming are

 Ice 53% thinner in region of North Pole between 2001 and 2007

 23% smaller than previous minimum; 39% smaller than average

 Ice only 3 feet thick in most locations

 In September 2007 an area the size of Florida (69,000 square miles)

melted in six days

 Humpback whales spotted in Arctic Ocean for first time in 2007

DECLINE OF FORESTS

 A dramatic decline has affected over 500,000 acres of yellow cedar

in SE Alaska

 The suspected cause is spring freezing injury, due to:

1.warm winters(pre-mature de hardening in spring time)

2.reduced snow cover(less insulation)

• OCEAN ACIDIFICATION:

The surface ocean currently absorbs about one-fourth of the CO2

emitted to the atmosphere from human activities.”

• CORAL BLEACHING:

 Corals damaged by higher water temperatures and acidification

 Higher water temperatures cause bleaching: corals expel

zooxanthellae algae

 Corals need the algae for nutrition

ANIMALS AT RISK:

• Polar bears

• Walruses

• Black guillemots

In September 2007 an area the size of Florida (69,000 square miles) melted in six
days
• Arctic grayling

• Kittiwakes

• Ice seals

• Salmon

• Caribou

THE above mentioned species are all at risk cos of gb warming.

These species are facing threat due to the following reasons

 Food harder to get

 Expanding diseases

 Competition

 Rising temperatures

 Shrinking habitat . thus gb warming attributes to the threat of

many spacies.

HEALTH IMPACTS:

Gb warming has caused following health impacts to the human kind.

They are

 Increased epidemics of malaria in Africa; new cases in Turkey and

elsewhere

 Increased cerebral-cardiovascular conditions in China

 Increased heat wave deaths on Europe (52,000 in 2003), typhoid

fever, Vibrio vulnificus, Ostreopsis ovata, Congo Crimea hemorrhagic
fever

 Dengue fever in SE Asia

 More mercury release, flooding, storms

WHO: 150,000 deaths and 5 million illnesses per year attributable to

global warming; numbers expected to double by 2030

MEASURES:

1. Conserve

2. Consume efficiently

In September 2007 an area the size of Florida (69,000 square miles) melted in six
days
3. Use renewables

4. Be involved

Energy Efficiency

 Reduce your home’s heat and energy loses

 Replace incandescent lights

with fluorescents

 Replace your appliances with

“energy star” rated appliances

 Buy a hybrid car

 Avoid cars for use of individual.

Renewables

 Install renewable energy systems: wind, solar, geothermal,

in-stream hydro

 Use biofuels

If we don’t act:

If we fail to act, and CO2 keeps rising at the current rate, then a
new modeling study predicts that:

 Average temperatures in many parts of northern North America will

rise more than 25oF by 2100

 Arctic tundra will decline from 8% to 1.8% of the world’s land area,
and Alaska will lose almost all of its evergreen boreal forests

 Extinctions and profound disruptions will ensue .

• So, its upto we individuals to reduce emission of green houses into

atmosphere

And save our beautiful planet of EARTH
