LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Name: Kendra Walter

Grade Level: 7th grade
School: James Valley Christian
Date: April 6, 2016
Time: 10:25-11:10

Reflection from prior lesson: Last lesson the students inserted their first couple sources into a Word document for
their research paper. Students were able to handle this very well and asked many questions when they were unable
to find the authors, publication dates, or any other hard to find information. Giving students this work time has
allowed the students to ask for help with the computer questions while they are with us instead of them not knowing
all of the resources available to them.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:

 7.ET.OC.3 Students Demonstrate Skills In Utilizing Technological Systems.
 7.ET.CC.1 Students Use Technology To Communicate With Others.

Lesson Objectives:
 Students will be able to properly insert an outline into their Microsoft Word documents with 100 percent
accuracy. (partnered with English class)
 Students will continue using the internet and books to find the necessary information for their research
paper. (partnered with English class) (continued)

Materials Needed: Microsoft Word, 16 Computers, students will bring their own notecards, research paper packets
provided by the English teacher

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

 This class meets every other day during the first half of the block. The class consists of 16 students, 4
males and 12 females. There are no students with an IEP in this section. These students have not had any
formal typing classes yet. Students have a wide range of typing speed. Students work on typing the sections
at their own pace. The students will soon be assigned typing assignments to be completed at home
however, they are only working on typing during class as they adjust to proper typing posture.

A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (5 minutes)
 Remind students that they will need all of their information for their research paper with them. If
they forgot anything, they need to get it from their locker. Students should also log onto their
computer and open up a blank Word document. (5 min)

2. Content Delivery (35 minutes)

 For the next couple class periods, we will be working with the English teacher to help students
write their research paper. This first class period we will walk through how to insert an outline
into Microsoft Word. Using a projector, I will walk through how to properly set up an outline as
they follow along on their own computer. The steps are explained below. Once the outline is set
up, student should then put their information into the document. We will also walk through how
your outline should look once you input information. (use the sample text from in the packet) (15
min)
o On the Paragraph section of the Home tab click on the down arrow by the multilevel list
button  Define New Multilevel List. We will then define a list based upon the handout
given to them by the English teacher. (Be sure to set the bullet and text indent at each
stage – increasing .25 inches at every point)

 Students may then use the rest of the class period to work on finding more sources, writing more
notecards, working on their outline or inserting more sources. (20 min)

3. Closure (5 min)
 Discuss with students their schedule for their research paper and make sure they understand what
is due for the next class period. (5 min)

B. Assessments Used
 Students will be receiving grades for the research paper in the English classroom. However, we
may give them a couple participation grades based upon whether they use their time wisely in our
classroom. (continued)

C. Differentiated Instruction
 As the class is paced for the average speed of the class, the faster ones are able to continue
increasing their speed by working as fast as they can and also moving on to sections that others
may not be able to get to.
 Students who may be struggling as fast as the others are to complete the assignment in the class
period and will get the extra practice later with at-home typing assignments.
 Students will have extra time to get help with any questions they might have during this block and
during their English class.

D. Resources
 Textbook
 English packet (provided to the students by the English teacher)
