Instructional Planning Grid

1. TEKS: 7.9B The learner will compute the circumference and area of a circle.
Objective: By the end of class, students will be able to compute the circumference and
area of a circle.
2. Big Understanding: Finding the area of a circle is similar to finding the area of a
parallelogram. Real world: Pizza is sold by length of diameter. Use circumference when
calculating how wide a hole to dig or putting a fence around a circular garden.
3. Assessment Evidence: Towards the end of class, have students answer a few questions on
their iPad.
4. Opening Hook: I will place several circular objects on a desk and ask the students what
they think they will be learning today.
5. Input: Review previously learned concepts of perimeter and area of a square and
rectangle.
Modeling: Give step by step directions for handout.
Guided Practice/monitoring: Have students color inside their circle (area) and trace along
the edge of their circle (circumference). Then students will use a piece of yarn to
measure the circumference. They will estimate the area and circumference. Give
formulas and have them calculate the actual area and circumference. Go over a few
problems as a class.
Check for understanding: Ask the students what is the difference between area and
circumference. Ask for similarities and differences of the formulas for area and
circumference.
6. Materials/Resources: handout, pencil, colors, calculator, ruler, yarn and iPad.
7. Grouping Patterns: Individual work and whole class discussion.
8. Ending, Summary/Reflection: Have students write notes in their spirals that include
diameter, radius, circumference and formulas. Once students have completed their task,
they can use their iPad to solve problems on the Khan Academy website. Students will
go to www.khanacademy.org, Math by grade-click on 7th, click on geometry, and click
on the practice problems on the right.

Recap: Circumference and area formulas. Point out differences in formulas.
