________________________________________________________

Subject: Science Grade Level: 2nd Grade Time Estimate: 45 min

Unit: Earth and Space Topic: Moon phases

Goal(s): TLW understand and appreciate the order of the moon phases, why they cycle, and
how they affect things on earth.

Objective(s): TLW demonstrate their understanding of the moon phases by creating a diagram
of the cycle (using the Oreos).

TEKS: §112.13. (8) Earth and space. The student knows that there are recognizable patterns in
the natural world and among objects in the sky.
The student is expected to: (D) observe, describe, and record patterns of objects in the sky,
including the appearance of the Moon.

Materials/Resources/Technology needs:
Brain pop Jr. video: https://jr.brainpop.com/science/space/moon/
Anchor Chart: Moon Phase Cycle
Oreos
Plastic spoons
Plates
IPad Cart
Seesaw app

SAFETY:
Spoons (instead of knives)
Allergy warnings
Clean hands before and after

Instructional Procedures

Focusing Event (ENGAGE):

Re-watch Brain pop jr. video to remind students of what we learned about moon phases in the
previous science lesson.
TTW also walk them through the anchor chart as well to ensure that they remember how the
cycle moves.
Teaching/ Learning Procedures:

EXPLORE:
TTW allow students to create the diagram of the moon phase cycle out of Oreos. They
will use the spoons to scrap off filling and create moons against black skies. These will
be arranged on the plates to form a cycle, (they may use markers to draw arrows
beneath the cookies).

EXPLAIN:
TSW take photos of their diagrams and upload them the pic collage apps on the school
iPads. They will use this app to label each phase. Then upload the finished project to
their Seesaw accounts where their parents can see their work.

ELABORATE:
TTW bring the class to the carpet and they will add to the anchor chart (or create a new
one) how the different phases affect life on Earth, things that are unique to each phase,
and clear up any misconceptions students may have.

Formative Check (ongoing or specific – should be embedded above in any/all of Explore, Explain,
Elaborate above as part of your on-going EVALUATION):
The diagram made in class, labeled, and uploaded will serve as a formative assessment
of learning. As well as understanding checks such as think, pair, share and thumbs up or
down throughout the lesson.

Reteach (alternative used as needed – should be embedded above in any/all of Explore, Explain,
elaborate as needed by your students):
If students require a reteach they will create a working group to help one another
complete the diagram. They may use the anchor chart as a model to create their own. If
more help is required, TTW pull students individually and check for understanding.

Closure:
The students will eat their cookies (if they choose to) and discuss in small groups ways that the
moon and its phases affect earth. They will create a ticket out the door by each writing a fact
they learned on an index card and turning it in to the teacher.

Assessment/Summative Evaluation:
The index card will serve as a formative ticket out the door check for understanding/ topic
summative assessment. A unit test towards the end of the unit will serve as the true summative
assessment of students’ knowledge.

Modifications/Notes:
GT: TSW further explain how the moon cycle affects things here on Earth. They will add
captions to their pic collage that explain something that occurs during a specific time in the
cycle.
SPED: Students may use pre designed Oreos and arrange them into the correct cycle. They will
be allowed to follow directly from chart or work in groups to ensure success and learning.
ESL: Students may work in partners or groups to ensure success and learning. They will also be
able to follow the chart directly or use language labels to help with comprehension.
