Professional Development Plan

1. What are your goals for the next 6 months, 3 years, and 10 years and how do you plan to
achieve those goals?
a. 6 months- My goal is to be working in an Emergency department in a level 2 trauma
hospital.
b. 3 years- My goal is to be finishing up my Bachelors degree and moving onto my Masters
degree.
c. 10 years- My goal is to have my Masters completed and be working in an Emergency
department at a level 1 trauma hospital.
2. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
a. I see myself with not only my Bachelors degree completed but my Masters in nursing
completed as well. I want to be working in an Emergency department for a level 1
trauma hospital and be at a high level of authority. Preferably all of this happening
outside the state of Florida.
3. Which professional/nursing organization do you belong to?
a. I do not belong to any professional/nursing organizations currently.
4. What are the Standards and Scope of Practice of Nursing in your future specialty/career?
a. Characteristics of emergency nursing practice include:
i. Assessment, analysis, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation of
interventions, outcome identification, and evaluation of human responses of
individuals in all age groups whose care is made more difficult by the limited
access to past medical history and the episodic nature of their health care.
ii. Triage and prioritization.
iii. Emergency operations preparedness.
iv. Stabilization and resuscitation.
v. Crisis intervention for unique patient populations, such as sexual assault
survivors.
vi. Provision of care in uncontrolled or unpredictable environments.
vii. Consistency as much as possible across the continuum of care.
5. What are the requirements to be certified in your future specialty?
a. To qualify for the exam, you must hold a current unrestricted Registered Nurse license
in the United States or its Territories. A nursing certificate that is equivalent to a
Registered Nurse in the United States is also acceptable. BCEN® recommends 2 years of
experience in the emergency department; however, it is not required. Once all
requirements are met I have the ability to sit for the CEN exam, which must be passed in
order to obtain CEN certification.
6. How do you plan to achieve the certification?
a. Once I have passed the NCLEX, I will begin studying for the CEN exam while working in
an emergency department as RN to gain experience in this specialty field.
7. Which professional certification(s) do you hold i.e. BLS, ACLS, PALS, etc.?
a. I currently only hold a BLS (Basic Life Support).
8. Which professional certification(s) do you plan to obtain in the next 6 months?
a. I plan on getting CEN, ACLS, and PALS certified within the next 6 months.
9. Have you participated in a professional activity? If so what have you done?
a. Yes, I have. I used my BLS knowledge to help resuscitate a patient when I volunteered at
the Jackson Hospital emergency department.
10. Have you explored FNA website? https://www.floridanurse.org/
a. Yes, but very briefly. I have plans to give the website a closer look once I have passed my
exit Hesi exam on the 30th.
11. Do you see any advantages to belonging to this organization? Please explain your answer.
a. There are always pros and cons to being a part of such organizations. The FNA definitely
gives the nurses a strong voice while giving us protection from whomever may try and
take advantage of our work. One of the only cons that immediately stood out to me
while glancing at their website was the fact that it is specific to Florida, which wouldn’t
help me if I do end up getting the opportunity to move out of Florida as planned.
