The Paul Oliver Foundation is a non-profit founded in 2014 in Memphis, TN that provides service animals at no cost to veterans suffering from PTSD and TBI. PTSD is a psychological condition caused by traumatic experiences like combat that causes reliving of trauma, avoidance, and disrupted sleep. TBI is permanent brain damage from concussions that over 350,000 veterans have been diagnosed with since 2001. Service dogs can help veterans with PTSD and TBI by providing companionship, reducing stress through oxytocin release, and encouraging outdoor activity. The foundation trains dogs for over a year at a cost of $11,000-$20,000 each to help veterans as the VA does not currently offer service dogs as a treatment option.
