Lesson: Fun with Fractions

Objectives
 Understand the idea of fractions as numbers
 Be able to relate fractions to everyday life
Materials Needed:
 Red Crayon (optional)
Lesson:
 Introduction (30 seconds)
o Today we will be talking and learning about fractions
 Objective (30 seconds)
o After today we will all be able to understand the idea of fractions as
numbers and be able to relate fractions to our everyday lives.
o Let’s get started
 Where do we see fractions? (1 minute)
o Fractions exist everywhere around us, whether we have noticed them are
not.
o A few examples are: Pizzas and pies (we will talk more about pizzas in a
minute), students in a classroom
 Does anyone have any other examples they know or can think of?
o Almost anything can be turned into a fraction
 How to Determine Fractions (5 minutes)
o Fractions are broken up into 2 numbers (A number on top and a number
on bottom)
 Numerator
 Denominator
 Easy way to remember this, a way I was taught was
denominator is on de-bottom
 Discuss the three pizza fractions
 Go over each pizza, explaining its fraction and how we
arrive at this number.
 More pizza examples (5-8 minutes)
o Give kids 4-6 minutes look at the pizza fractions to think about them by
themselves, before we go over the content as a class
o Go over each of the 16 example pizzas together
 leaving gaps where students answer the questions out loud
 Recap (2 minutes)
o Short recap, reminding students of the content we talked and learned about
today
 Have students look & think about fractions throughout the week
 Following week refresh content and give student examples
 Individual Assignment CFU (5 minutes)
o Explain Instructions
o Explain how students complete/turn in assignments
