Introduction
The Beeper is an extremely-sensitive, audio-only, solar-powered variometer. In Compass’ style, its audio
profile is fully customizable to your taste.

Its power source is a supercapacitor: even in complete darkness, it insures more than 30 minutes of
continuous use with virtually unlimited charge/discharge cycles. When the Beeper is under direct
sunlight, the solar cell mounted on the unit provides energy to the supercapacitor, allowing hours of
uninterrupted flight.

The Beeper can store three different audio profiles. You can customize them by using the Compass C.S.S.
utility on your PC. You can for example create a profile for stronger days and one for weaker conditions,
choosing which one to use with a simple key press.

How to use your Beeper

• On/Off slider. Switches on and off your unit. When you switch your Beeper on, you should hear
a double beep. If you don’t, please recharge the unit before use.

• USB connector. Allows recharging the supercapacitor extremely rapidly. Two-three minutes
connected to the USB port of a PC or to another 5-V mini-USB power supply are enough for a
complete charge.

• Pushbutton. In normal use, it controls the volume, cycling through low-med-hi. A single beep
signals that the “low” level has been activated, a double beep stands for medium, and a triple
beep corresponds to the highest volume.

Holding the button pressed for two seconds allows accessing two different advanced operating modes,
announced by a triple beep:

• Audio profile choice

• USB connection to PC
Advanced operating modes
Press the pushbutton for two seconds to enable the advanced operating modes. This is signaled by the
Beeper by a triple beep, followed, after three seconds, by a beep-boop sound. During these time, the
Beeper checks if a PC is connected to its mini-USB port. If so, the Beeper enters the “USB programming”
mode, allowing to modify the audio profiles. Otherwise, it enters the “Audio profile choice” mode.

Choice of the audio profile

Each of the three audio profiles makes your Beeper respond to different vertical speeds with different
combinations of sound frequency, number of beeps per second and shorter/longer beeps, exactly as its
bigger brother the Compass’ C-Pilot PRO.

When entering the “Audio profile choice” mode, the currently selected audio profile is played, as if your
vertical speed were rising from 0 to 12 m/s (2300 ftm). Further short presses of the button will cycle
through the three different profiles. Each time a new profile is selected, it is played to allow you to
choose your preferred one.

After approximately 10 seconds of inactivity, the normal “volume” mode is restored. The Beeper tells
you this with a boop-beep sound.

When powering off and on again the Beeper, the last selected profile will be used by default.

USB connection to PC
This operating mode allows you to modify the three stored audio profiles and customize them to your
taste. To do this, please install the Compass C.S.S. utility on your PC (compatible with Windows XP and
Windows 7). Please refer to its user manual for operating instructions. Disconnect the (optional) USB
cable to restore the normal operating mode.
