ASSIGNMENT: TECHNICAL REPORT (written assignment & presentation)

Note: This assignment will need you to form a group of 5 students to be able to undertake the
tasks. As per usual norms of a group, your group must subsequently divide the task among other
group members.

Task: Assume that you have started your first job after graduation as a telecommunication engineer
with one of the established telecommunication companies. You have been assigned to prepare a
technical report on ONE (1) of the following topics.

1. Fifth Generation (5G) Communication System

2. Ultra Wideband (UWB)
3. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
4. Global Positioning System (GPS)
5. Wireless Sensor Network
6. Satellite Communication System
7. Underwater Communication System
8. Wireless Mesh Network
9. High Altitude Platform (HAP)
10. Fourth Generation (4G) Communication System

AIMS:
The aim of this assignment is multifold. First, it gives you an opportunity to learn some of the state-
of-the-art technologies in telecommunication engineering at your own initiative. Most importantly,
in view of the rapid developments in telecommunications, it is impossible to cover everything in the
current course. Besides, having the right attitude in completing this assignment should benefit your
professional life beyond graduation.

ASSESSMENT SCHEME (15% of the final mark):

INSTRUCTIONS FOR WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT :

1. The written assignment (hardcopy report) must be submitted to the lecturer and softcopy
through Ulearn.
2. The submitted report should be on A4 paper and limited to 10 pages (max) (not including front
page cover).
3. The font of the report should be the Times New Roman, font size 12 with 1.5 spacing.
4. All submitted manuscripts should be written fully in English.
5. The report should include the following topics:
(Part a): Brief overview of the technology/theory/technical in terms of potential use in
applications, how it will change lives or the way things are done, the potential growth areas it
will impact, etc. (1 to 2 pages)
(Part b): What are the recent major technology developments associated with the selected
topic? (1 to 2 pages)
(Part c): Describe the following Commercial Development Parameters for the technology
concerned: demand factors, general constraints, competing technologies and regulatory factors.
(1 to 2 pages)
(Part d): Why this technology important for Malaysia to develop / acquire? (1 page)
(Part e): Who are the major players of the technology? (1 page)
(Part f): References (1 page)
