How Many Hats???

“The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins” is the perfect story to help second grade
students understand math and subtraction. This story is about a young boy named
Bartholomew Cubbins that takes off his hat and another one appears. Throughout the
entire story the hats are being added together. You can do a math activity were you can
stack hats up in two separate stacks and have students add them together. You can also
make a stack of two hats and instead of adding them you can have students subtract them.
Using this story as a way to teach adding and subtracting could be helpful and fun for
second graders.
