Lesson: 6th Grade Drumming/ Composing

Materials:
Drums
Whiteboard
Staff Paper
Pencils
Erasers

Objectives:
Students will be able to…
Keep a steady beat
Replicate rhythms given by teacher
Improvise over a steady beat
Compose rhythms

Procedure:
DO NOW
Students will walk in and read board
Do now will say “please QUIETLY come in, QUIETLY get a drum from any part of the
room, and PRACTICE the rhythm on the board. You have 5 minutes”
Teacher will take attendance while students complete DO NOW
Teacher will walk around while students decode rhythm
After 5 minutes, teacher will bring attention to the whiteboard
Teacher will go over rhythm with students
Go over ta, ti ti, tic a tic a, isolate any problem measures
Class will play rhythm all together
Have helpers pass out staff paper, pencils, and erasers
Have students write name and class at the top
Have students draw a line down the middle of the paper
Have students compose an 8 measure rhythm using tas, ti ti, and tic a tic
Students have 10-15 minutes to compose
Walk around to address any questions.
After 10-15 minutes and teacher checking the rhythm, students can practice the
rhythm on their drum
Put drums away, sheets on orange chair, line up
