Abstract
Communication is ubiquitous in all animals. However, Dolphins take

communication to a different level above water and also underwater. Dolphins use

unique sounds for different needs when trying to interact or locate something visually.

Several studies throughout the years have proven that each Dolphin has their own

unique sound and that their communication makes them the intelligent animals they are.

How do Dolphins communicate?

Dolphins are able to communicate with one another through sounds made. They

develop their sounds in early life, each having their own distinct sound helps them distinguish

each other. Dolphins are able to make noise through their larynx. When they allow air to pass

through, a vibration is made which generate the noise. Dolphins can make two types of sounds,

tones and pulses.

Tones

Dolphins are known to use two types of vocal communication, tones and pulses. Vocal

tones are used to interact with other dolphins. Tones can be identified as whistles, squeaks, and

squeals. ADD INFORMATION AND RESEARCH

Pulses and Echolocation

Another form of communication Dolphins use are pulses. Pulse sounds are reached by using

soundwaves and also vocals known as “clicks” due to the intervals of the sound. This form of

communication is also known as echolocation. Echolocation is using soundwaves emitting off

objects to locate something or where the dolphin is. “Dolphins need echolocation to

navigate, locate prey, hunt, protect themselves from predators in murky waters or where

there is no sunlight and to communicate (Dolphin Echolocation)”. ADD MORE

How it works

What can we learn from Dolphins?

Through the research of how Dolphins communicate and how they use it to get through

everyday, we can learn many other characteristics about them and other animals. ADD MORE
