ELAGSE6W10 Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research,
reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a
day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and
Brief Description of Learning Experience: As you address the standards, what will students and teachers do? How will
the project be introduced? How long will it take to complete? What audience will use/care about the multimedia projects
students are creating? How broad is this audience? How will student work be assessed and by whom? Who will provide
feedback to students about their work? (Overview should be a minimum of 2 paragraphs):
I will introduce the project by showing the class the video I made for this project: A Mini-Biography on J.K.
Rowling.” This video not only teaches them about the author but serves as an example for what I will expect from
them. I will then have given them the assignment, which would require each student to make a short video at
least three minutes long that serves as a summarized version of a biography. They can then choose any author
that they like and create their video. The project would require images, video footage, and audio of some sort,
and should serve as a quick overview of the author they have chosen. I will teach the students how to use the
program: Windows Movie Maker, which is a free video editing software that is easy to use. This would take a class
period or two depending on the student’s level of understanding. Throughout the week, my students would use
their class time to conduct research on their chosen authors and begin to construct their videos
. Being a research assignment in nature, student would be expected to learn proper citation to include in their
work. I would spend my time as the instructor, walking throughout the room and help each student when they

need it; checking to make sure everyone understands how to use the technology. I would also encourage them to
work on it at home as well if they feel they need more time. I think the project would take about a week for a 6 th
grade class. Each student would then be able to upload this onto the internet onto the classroom webpage where
they could see each other’s work and respond to one another’s videos. I will assess the students on their work,
and each student will also be asked to reflect on other’s videos as well. Each student will have feedback from
myself, and from their peers in class.
Student Engagement/Higher-Order Thinking: What LoTi level would this lesson be and Why? This would be 5th level.
It is 5th level because it fits all of the standards present in level 5 and 4. It allows for two-way
collaboration with the classroom community, it is student centered, it involves use of multiple
technologies, allows the student to apply their gained knowledge in the real world, and the learning
becomes important and relevant. It involves higher level thinking skills, and is centered around
content, and process. It is a fantastic assignment for meeting the standards of 6th grade English
requirements, as well as teaching important technology proficiencies.
Importance of technology: Why is using a multimedia authoring tools critical to the project? Could the project be
completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other types of technology, if any, are
going to be used in the learning experience?
These tools are critical because they are necessary for the student to make the video. The video will require
computer skills, logic, creativity, and problem-solving skills. The students are going to learn how to conduct
research, find audio, edit audio, find video, and edit video. They are also going to learn about proper citation,
as well as learn about their chosen author. It is a project that is dependent on the use of multiple technologies.
Inspiration (optional): If you used existing multimedia projects as a model for your project (whether in part or whole),
include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you “borrowed” from others.

I used clips of J.K. Rowling from these multi-media projects so that I could get some video
footage of the author in my project. I wanted to include video clips because it gives it a more
lively feel and is more interesting to watch.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding internet safety and student
privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain how you’d minimize risks to
students/yourself, alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, and follow school districts’ Internet Safety/Use Policy.
I would ensure that my students are staying on the correct sites when at school to keep them on task, and keep
them away from sites they should not be on. In order to minimize the risk of their videos that potentially would
link their appearance or voice to their name, I would only have the students post to the class website and not to a
public forum. The class website would be only accessible via provided log-in in formation. This helps keep
students safe and makes the videos easy to find when students watch each other’s videos to leave feedback.
Other comments about your proposed student multimedia authoring activity:
This project is meant to be a fun, engaging, and useful learning experience. I want the students to
improve on their research skills and learn useful technology skills. I think the journey is just as
important as the destination, and will be grading based mainly on effort, progress, participation,
creativity, and correct citation.
