TAILORED MUSIC VIDEOS IN ELL CLASSROOMS 2

Abstract

This case study investigated the use of tailored music videos to teach grammar and

support a low-affective-filter learning environment in a college level Essay Writing class in

Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. Two music videos were created and shown in class to teach the use

of participle adjectives and indefinite articles. Data was collected in the form of writing samples,

assessment exit slips, and student reception exit slips. Results showed growth in the execution of

both participle adjectives and indefinite articles in the post-video assessments and post-video

writing samples, indicating that the music videos were effective in teaching their respective

grammar points. Student reception exit slips showed that the music videos were perceived as a

fun and relaxing way to learn grammar, indicating that the music videos were successful in

supporting a low-affective-filter learning environment. These positive results call for further

research regarding the use of tailored music videos in ELL classrooms.
